Exactly! Just because you went to Wal-Mart today, in the good part of town, and nobody got shot doesn't mean that it won't happen tomorrow...or the next day. Hopefully it won't, but better to be safe than sorry.

All I can say is, the right to keep and bear arms is granted by the second amendment. If you choose not to exercise that right, and possibly become a victim, that is also your right. Just let those who do decide to exercise it do it in peace.....and don't forget to thank them should they save YOUR life one day.

Trust me- if someone saves my life, I would be grateful. But I've got lots of other things to worry about and being shot by someone on the street is not one of them. On the other hand, my commute puts me at serious life-threatening risks every day. Add about 1,000 other everyday things that can kill you, and carrying all the necessary "equipment" to protect myself is impossible.

Lesson here: You can't protect yourself from everything nor from even specific threats. Be glad for your days on earth and enjoy them. That's really about the only thing you can control.

very true. but it is also like a buddy of mine says.. if it's going to happen it's going to happen. but my response is that if you put yourself in harms way then you can't really say it's God's Will. He will say it about snow boarding down a mountain side. Maybe but if you didn't take that cliff run then you probably have a much higher likelyhood of not dying

I don't conceal carry and am not sure that I want to but at the same time the thought of maybe having been around with a gun to have possibly helped those 4 cops that died weighs on the mind too. Or that nut that was in (was it tennessee?) that went on a shooting rampage around his relative's house

and you can't protect yourself from getting killed in your sleep by the hooker you didn't send home, but you sure can protect yourself from herpies by wearing a condom......... pick your battles, and win the ones you can.

I carry because it is my second amendment right...and if I can help my fellow man when they're in trouble - I'm there...

...and finally - If you plan to fight fair if you ever get into a fight - you've already lost...

Well in Montana you can't carry into any convenience store or Gas Station if they sell Beer. Can't carry in a Bar, Any Local, county, State or Federal Bulding. My 44 mag will be in the Truck but seldom on my person unless I'm in the Mountains 4 wheeling or ATVing. Because It's A Right Doesn't Mean SHIT-It's A Prevlidge and It comes with lots of responsability

when did that change in montana? maybe i missed something but no gun in a gas station? it is a privilage, but also a responsibility!
being a service member, i see it my responsibility to protect this country from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. how can i do that without being properly armed?

99.9% of all LEGAL weapon carriers will ever use them. but you talk to that .1% that are still alive, that still has a living family or friend because they made the decision to carry and protect their country men...... then you'll see why people carry.

I find it funny that, in the wake of the Tucson shooting, those congressmen who aren't TOTALLY anti-gun are talking about legislation that would allow them to pack heat at work - basically on federal properties where it is currently prohibited.

I am retired military, with more than your average basic weapons training, I work on a DoD facility, and I have a concealed Carry License...I can't carry to/from work because I can't bring my piece on the installation...no one seemed to think changing that would be a good idea after the Ft. Hood shooting???? What's the difference?

I think congress should drop the restrictions on ALL lawful carry on federal properties....don't just protect their own hides...

Apocryphal story has it that Elmer Keith, developer of the .44 MAgnum and .357 Mag loads, author of many books, editor of Guns and Ammo (IIRC), and I THINK an NRA past president, once showed up at work carrying something like 11 concealed handguns just to show it could be done. Someone asked him "why carry so many guns? what are you afraid of?" "Not a damned thing," he replied.

Of course, it could have been someone else, but the sentiments are clear.

Armed, a man is a citizen, equal to many, disarmed, he is a victim of violent crime waiting to happen.

Justices Rule Police Do Not Have a Constitutional Duty to Protect Someone

source:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/28/po.../28scotus.html

and that's from the Supreme Court, so if the police don't have a duty to protect you then that makes it your duty, thus you need a way to defend yourself. Seems rather logical to me.

Why is it...that almost every time conceal carry discussions pop up, it ALWAYS turns into a political piss-fest?

Damn...CC is gonna end up on the "TOPICS NOT ALLOWED" list on TW before too long.

Great post. I carry for all of the above but this one is my favorite.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die
> and go to Heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

My wife wants to be a cowgirl, so muggers beware. She out shoots most guys I know. I'm so proud!

So unless you have your gun in your hand, unlocked, loaded, and aimed 24/7 at a split-second notice, then you might as well be carrying around a pea shooter.

But if you want to really worry about threats, you will likely get in a car wreck sometime in your lifetime, there are countless diseases that at any time could flare up and decimate millions, and leagues of rogue nations who could cause global conflict.

Again- not saying you're wrong for owning one and protecting yourself. Just questioning their effectiveness for the reasons people claim they own them. By the fact that so many people openly brag about their weapons, I suspect there's more reasons than as being used for protection. My dad has them too and he keeps his mouth shut.
Owning & shooting guns can be different things to different people. A hobby .... There are soooo many different things you can do with guns/shooting. Having a CC and carrying a gun is just another form of the hobby.

For some people - we're not afraid of going places and we're not afraid of being attacked..... It's about self-improvement. It's about learning the whole 'art' of self defense. I'm currently on my 3rd book about self defense and CC. It's very interesting. CC is unlike any other hobby..... There's no stop watches, no competition, no judgements. It's just YOU and an 'improved' mindset. It forces you to be a 'better person' because of the responsibility at hand. And yes.....Carrying a weapon is a MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY. If someone tells you it isn't, they're not doing it right.

Knowledge is power. The more you know about self defense whether you carry or own a gun or not....the better off you'll be regardless. Nobody ever said that carrying a weapon is gonna save your ass. But having one, using it wisely, resonsibly, and safely....can certainly UP your anti. So why the hell not? With this hobby, you can go about your own business and enjoy the hobby silently, day to day OR you can decide to voice your pride openly. It's whatever YOU want from the hobby.

This right is not granted by the 2nd amendment. It is recognized as a God given right, even for the atheists
