I have the XDM .40 and love it. It's a bit on the larger side for a CCP, but it's all I carry.

honestly i think a lot depends on your height, weight, what you wear on your feet usually, the climate in your area.
the smaller you are the smaller the pistol you can conceal easily. if you usually wear boots, an ankle rig probably isn't the best option in my opinion. if you typically wear shorts, that obviously also takes out the ankle rig. i am a big fan of the Ruger LCP .380. i have a few handguns but i primarily choose the LCP because it is the lighest, smallest, and most comfortable forme to conceal based on the handguns i own.
first i would decide where you want to conceal it on your body (inside the pocket, inside the waist, outside the waist, ankle), then decide what handgun to go with by what is most comfortable in that place. lets face it if it isn't comfortable you will be less likely to take it with you, and risk becoming a sheep if the wolf shows up. i have friends that are bigger guys that can conceal bigger guns on their hip wearing a t-shirt with no problem. i need to hoody or coat to do that.
i also conceal a S&W 442 .38 special revolver.. it is heavier and bulkier than the LCP, less capacity, but more reliable. revolver vs. auto is a whole different debate...

Hold (and shoot if you can) the XD, the S&W M&P 9, and the Glock 19 Gen 4. All three are great options. From there it's a matter of personal taste.

The reason I didn't list 99 other good options is that one of these will surely fit you and serve you well and after you have a lot of experience with it and know what you want and don't want you won't need to ask what gun to get, you can just go out and find the ones that fit any certain needs you may find.

Of the three I actually liked the XD the least in hand. The M&P was the most comfortable and the G19 the second most. I ended up with the G19 after I fired them and cleaned them. I just liked it. I still want an M&P someday. ha

I agree completely with the above post...glock 19 or 26 are good choices, as is the glock 33. M&p is also a great choice and so it xd

S&W, Glock and Springfield are still my recommendations. And I'm a proponent of 9mm as well, which is what the OP is looking for. It's only so long before the 45 gurus try and sway him haha. I rarely shoot my 45 since getting 9s. And 22s haha cheap is cheap, man.

my dad has the xdm 9m and i loved shooting it. One of the things i liked most was the easy take down and clean, i also like the safety. im 6ft 166,and intend on carrying under the waist band at 3oclock right side. i shot the lcp 38 and it was a little small for my hands, the recoil and rub of my fingers on the trigger guard killed me. I thought about the glocks, but was under the impression they had no safety true not true? also, this would be my first CC, is carrying that hard? I typically wear t-shirs, is that enough?

    thanks for all the advice?

also, good price? was thinkin about just pickin it up at the local cabelas

    Glocks have no safety.
If i were to carry i'd prefer a hammer fired weapon with a decocker (if semi-auto) and carry double action with no safety.

    They actually have three safeties.
Trigger lock, slide lock, and firing pin lock.

They are deactivated by pulling the trigger.

XD is the same EXCEPT it has a grip safety that deactivates the slide lock... but like the Glock, a normal grip and trigger pull shuts the safety off.

For IWB I would get an M&P Shield in 9mm or an M&P 40c, if you can deal with the bulk. For pocket carry, an LCP.

If you decide on the XDS make sure you buy one that has the recall fix. I just sent mine in last week and it's a 9-10 week turnaround for repair (from what I've read and heard). I did not have it during the summer, so I don't have experience carrying it with shorts and a t-shirt, but depending on the size of your t-shirt I think it's doable. Carrying it IWB in winter is a piece of cake.

    I carry a full size 1911 .45 because they don't make a .46.
