First one that Dad gave me was an Arminius 8 shot 22LR revolver.
The first one that I'm gonna buy will be a smith and wesson M&P 40 Pro, with the 5'' barrel.

First pistol was a Walther P22. Favorite pistol is either Glock 19 or Glock 20

The first pistol that I bought was a Kahr CM9. I wasted 700 rounds of ammo trying to break it in. Then I traded it in on a Glock 19.

there are a lot of guns, pistols out there but, if you are purchasing strictly for in home protection, you might not want or need to buy the most popular or expensive thing out there. A good used 357 or 38 would serve you well. Holding 6 rounds, if you need more than that, practice more for better accuracy.

My home defense weapons are the HK P2000SK in the nightstand with a 12 Gauge Mossberg 500 in the closet. My daily carry is a Glock 17 and will be replaced by the HK VP9. I opted for the 9mm over .40 or .45 due to their increased ammo cost and marginal ballistics advantages.

If your looking for home defense I recommend a shot gun.
    3 reasons
    1. everyone knows the sound of a shotgun racking
    2. you can easily hit your target with less damaging your home and no change of shooting into the next room or house
    3. unless you are ready to kill someone, a hand gun really just introduced a deadly weapon to the situation. unless your a marksman your going to aim for the chest. a shotgun you could easily shoot someone in the legs, or just hit them with it.
Be honest with yourself about the situation, your ability, and who your really protecting

I have a 12g pump under the bed and my .40 handgun locked in a closet for the range only.

G17 that I've put tens of thousands of rounds through and still sits bedside for HD duty. I've used this for competitions, classes & torture tests. I don't know that there's a firearm I am more familiar with or trust my life to more than this puppy. Being as it was my first handgun I even conceal carried it for a while before buying something more suited for the task. IMO if you plan to buy only one handgun for HD and carry I would suggest a G19. If you have the convenience of owning several it's best to buy one suited to each need but if you need one that can do all very well... tough to beat the G19. Right out of the box and into a holster w/o any need for adjustments, modifications or additions. It just works. The beauty is in the simplicity.

Here's how my G17 sits right now with a few mods...

As it has been mentioned ad nauseam in every thread here

    1. racking a shotgun to scare an intruder is only a good idea on tv...in real life you just gave away your biggest tactical advantage by letting the intruder know where you are

    2. buckshot will absolutely penetrate a wall

    3. you should NEVER EVER EVER aim for an extremity. period. if you are bringing a gun to the fight, then you best be prepared to shoot to stop the threat. when/if it ever happens, your adrenaline will be pumping so high that you should ALWAYS train to shoot for the biggest target...center mass...ALWAYS

The only reason I would ever hit someone with a firearm is because I have emptied the mag and theyre still fighting (yes it happens)

Get that (bolded) out of your head right now, when you buy a firearm you want several things, reliability, accuracy, and up there in the top is how it fits your hand.
Before you buy any gun find a range that has one and will let you shoot it, or join a forum where they have shoots and you can shoot the gun you're looking at.

Note, this is just my opinion, some will disagree and that's fine.
