Best cheap reliable shotgun for around $300 would probably be a Remington 870 in my books.

I'm not sure if it's under $300 but it's close.

You really can't go wrong with the Remington 870 :)

The Mosberg 500 isn't a bad gun either if you can find one used. I would still take a 870 over one but hey, to each their own

870 there are lots of parts for and different ways you can go about building them if you want too. Mossberg has a smaller following for "tactical" parts and winchesters have very little. Depends what OP is going to use the gun for.

    Swank,

If the intended use is home defense, then consider a double barrel 12 gauge. To be awoken in the middle of the night it is far easier to load a double barrel than a pump shotgun in darkness.

If someone breaks into your house, chances are once they hear that shotgun rack, they'll be out the door

Wait until Christmas. Buy a $375 shotgun for $320. Budget guns are always a sacrifice. Shotguns should be built well.

    H&R pardner pump.
Chinese copy of the 870 that is good quality, all parts interchange between the H&R and the 870 except barrels.

I picked up a Vietnam era Hi Standard for under 2 bills a couple years ago...I'd take it over any of the newer budget shotguns any day.

With that being said, Rem 870 or Moss 500 are pretty much the standard quality budget pumps out there. You won't go wrong with either.

And don't expect to scare away an intruder with the racking sound. Expect only that it will give away your best tactical advantage during an extremely high stress situation. If a shotgun is to be used for home defense, you should learn how to make the shotgun rack ready or cruiser ready

To an extent I suppose. I have friends who bought the Big 5 Mossberg special and a Winchester Defender and they're both about as crappy as I could imagine.

I'd buy reasonable and buy once, prices will drop for Christmas. Get a 500 or an 870. Own it for life.

95 taco, can you say the same for the Handi Rifles? I am really interested in them.

We have one in 20 gauge, I use it as a squirrel gun and when it's not in the woods it's in the safe with 5 rounds of buckshot ready to go.

Action is a little rough but I trust it.

Never fired or held a handi rifle, seen a few at the local pawn shop.
from what I've read they're decent for what they are.

So you wouldn't want to have the guy run away when you could sneakily shoot him from a dark corner with a shotgun?

I am not saying someone who enters your home at night doesn't deserve to get shot but if they're not there to hurt me and only steal something from the unoccupied living room I would prefer they run away when they know there's an awake armed occupant than shoot someone without giving them a chance to prone out or fuck off. If I saw they had a gun I'd drop them without saying a word. Lots of variables, so I don't really disagree but a lot of times a shotgun rack would be worth giving away your location if it meant the 14 year old ran away.

Oh - and Rem 870 is what I'd recommend. Love mine.

870 for sure. Hard to beat when compared to similar guns within $100 of its price.
