OK I know I came to the right place.
Looking for an all weather synthetic stalk 308 bolt action hunting rifle good for 500yds.
Been looking at a remington 700. Ruger american compact and a couple others. any suggestions. I am just getting into this

    Cheers

remignton are good, but weatherby or kimber are really good options. Savage makes a good rifle these days as well. Its just depends on what you want to do with it. Just hunt, i'd say weatherby or savage. Feel like customizing? remington.
i would also stick away from the bull barrels, i got one for my remington 700 .308 since back east we hunt from deer stands, but now that i moved west, i have to walk everywhere with like a 15lb rifle

Try the Savage 110. Hands down the best bang for your buck....terrible pun....I have 4 (2 x 30-06, .308, .270Win) They fit great (5'7"), are easy to shoot. Fairly good trigger. All the rifles can hit 4/4 on a 18"x20" steel hog at the range.

Great advice so far. I will look into savage. I am in the early stages so lots of research. Mainly hunting is the use. some target, but ut has got to work in the rain. I live on the west coast of canada.

Check out wholesale sports if there's one near by. I got a stevens 200 in .308 from their Langley store for $230 on a sale. Pretty bare bones gun, but it's made by Savage and comes with a really nice bolt for the money.

Can't go wrong with a remington 700, but the savage accutrigger is nice:infantry:

Ha, I hear you. I sometimes stop at the Cabelas in Tulalip and it really depresses me. Wish we had that kind of selection locally.

    I have a couple Rem 700's (308, 06, 270, 300 RUM). couple savages (243, 308) couple and a couple weatherby's (06 and 308)

Like them all equally. But my savage model 11 lightweight hunter in 308 really stands out to me. I walk a lot so the light guns are what I like

make sure you pick something light then. Also don't go cheap on the scope. Don't need a night force or anything fancy, but a leupold or a high quality nikon will save you a lot of headache. buy once, cry once.

for off the shelf accuracy..you need to look at a Tikka T3. really good barrels from a factory.

You didn't mention budget.... As others have said, you can't go wrong with Savage. Accurate, Accu-trigger is smooth, not much not to like.

As far s budget goes 1500 max. I think that puts the Tikka out of my range. I wish Id never heard of it after looking at the webpage. Very nice

You can get a badass rifle & scope for that much. i think winchester model 70 is another pretty classic rifle you can look into. pretty affordable too.

Wow just checked the cabellas website and the T3 is around 700. The reason I was thinking 1500 was for the remington 700 xcr
I might have to recrunch the numbers and see what I really need outta the rifle. Thx for the T3 tips guys

First off, no one has asked what your hunting. Do you need a .308? What type of terrain are you in?

There are tons of guns out there that will work for many different applications. If it's the caliber you want then fine, but dont base your selection on just an idea of what you want.

There are so many weapons out there that will work for so many different applications.

The .308 is a fine weapon, so is the .300 win mag, 7mm weatherby, my .270 Sako can take down just about anything I want out to 1,000 yrds.

Your talkng 500 yrds, thats not a far distance. Shit you can take down anything shy of an Elk or Moose at 500 yrds with a 5.56.

A .30.30 will take care of most north american game.

You have alot of questions to answer before you settle on a hunting rifle.

Not trying to dictate OP, just think about it. I hunt just about every day. I would be happy to answer any questions. Dont go buying on a whim.

    Good question.
The type of terrain I am in presently is going to be a max shot of 200yds. Deer hunting. I am facing a move to the interior where my range will be at best 400-500yds. Possibly bear if the chance comes about
I am a 308 fan after shooting in my local militia as a youth. We shot the FN C1. Loved the rifle. Loved the kick/ I believe what I am looking for is similar to that but lighter and just as capable.
I have been out of the rifle seen for quite a long time and and just checking it out again

I also think .308 is a great round for those needs.
