Never liked STI 1911s, and Dan Wesson makes one of the most beautiful renditions available IMO. Illegal in CA, unfortunately, but after I got a Baer TRS I really, really wanted a DW. I am a fan of their company, I think.

It's the safest method of carrying a 1911, other than carrying unloaded.

Ok all you 1911 guys, I'm finishing up my two Caspian 80% frames and ready to get some slides. Any recommendations? 5" or 6"? Don't want a snub nosed carry but don't want a long ass target pistol with an optic. I think I confused my self and don't have time to do the research right now but don't want to make an expensive mistake. I will be using it to plink, home defense and carry possibly but I do have carry Glocks. Since I'm pretty tired right now I'll ask a stupid question, What is the difference between 70 and 80 series? I hate sounding stupid as I'm a pretty good smith but have no experience with these and don't have time right now to go through about 5 great books on them (work graveyard and watch my 19 month old son during the day). Thanks

I see no reason to do a 6" slide unless you are competing or hunting with it. Doesn't sound like you are doing either, so I'd go with a 5" Government slide OR more likely (for myself) a Commander sized slide. I think traditionally they're 4" or 4.25", I don't recall off hand. Jerry Kuhnhausen's 1911 shop manuals (volume 1 and 2) are worth their weight in gold

Series 70 is true to the original design and sometime in the mid 1980s (I think) the Series 80 was born, which has a few internal pieces that add a bit more safety, like a firing pin block. Some say 80s have worse triggers. If I was building my own, I'd not bother with the Series 80 parts.

Caspian makes a nice frame. Congrats.

Cool sounds like 5 it is. That's what I was thinking and yes both those books are on my night stand along with some other manuals and all the AGI videos. Not worried bout the trigger as that will be worked over till its like butter. Thanks James!

Would love to see build pics if you're down to show them off. I can't have a Caspian build here in CA. :jellydance:

No problem one is done and plan on doing the other soon when I get some time. I'll take some pics while I do the second. Oh yeah I'm doing them in .40 SW. Don't see a need for the 45 and 9mm not enough in my book. Don't get me wrong I don't want to get hit by a 22LR but REALY don't want to get hit by a .40 hollow point!

I have a Caspian slide but don't like it, glad I only ordered one. Was just looking at the stainless slides from Fusion Firearms and kinda like the Commander length now that I look at it more. I like the idea they use the 9mm firing pins to handle hotter loads.

As for small parts, probably a mix and match. Wilson combat has some nice stuff at reasonable prices, and probably some surplus parts for the stuff that doesn't matter much.

What was wrong with the Caspian slide? I'm a huge fan of Commander length. I think the traditional is 4" and I believe it's Kimber who does a 4.25" length.
