I'd say you're losing about 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch on all sides (maybe 10% loss overall). As for the room between there and the lid, I'm not familiar with the particular mod you're talking about, but unless you're removing the plastic underside cover of the OEM lid, it's unlikely that a mini Mag-Lite would fit under there. The lid of the vault is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch below the original console edge with the OEM lid up (if that makes sense). Also, whichever locking mechanism you choose, I'd have to think that it would get in the way of putting something between the two lids.

Oh yeah...just remembered I mean to say this also...my Ruger SP-101 with extended Hogue grip in .357 fit in there barely with the holster (had to try a couple of different positions for it to fit). However, my wife's S&W Airweight Bodyguard in .38 fits in there easy.

Here, you can carry just about anything so long as it's in a latched compartment. Loaded, unloaded, doesn't matter if it's in a latched place.

Also, if you have long guns, they have to be in a case, and not readily accessible to any occupants of the vehicle.
