Rifle Scopes

Hey guys and gals,

I recently bought a savage .270. I say recently its been sitting in our safe for about 4 months haha. But my question is I need some ideas on scopes. Most of the time I hunt waterfowl so there for I never need a scope, but I had some extra money and I wanted a rifle so I bought this one.

So any ideas on what size/power of scope good brands, bad brands. I would say keep it in the $300 and less price range

I'm assuming this is to deer hunt? Probably don't need more than a 3-9 power scope. As far as quality brands, can't go wrong with leuopold but I've heard a lot of good things about the bushnell elite 3200 & 4200's and they're in your price range. The 3200 for sure (usually around $200-225), the 4200 might be a bit over $300.

 

Ya its for deer hunting. And i guess my biggest question is what power or size do I need. I really wont be taking shots over probably 500yd at the very max but Id like to have something that if someday I want to take a 800yd shot I can. And i don't know enough about scopes to know if this can be achieved with the same scope but I assume it can.

 

I've never shot at anything that far away, but if you want you can check out the 4-12 power scopes, I'd imagine you'd have a decent look from that distance. I've got a 3-9 on my 30.06 and usually leave it set at 5x magnification and am pretty good out to 300yds but in all honesty I've never turned it up more than that because it works pretty well for what I do.

 

holy crap 500yd shots, thats out there. most i take around were i hunt are MAYBE 150-200 yards. i couldnt even tell you what to go with for shooting that far since ive never had the chance. I have a nikon prostaff 2-7 power and i love it. So for brand wise id recommend nikon but its a biased opinion

 

3x9x40 scopes are always a good power for most things, and leupold, nikon, and burris make some great scopes, along with tru-glo also.

Haha ok guys I realize I kinda sounds like a douche eariler 500 yds is damn far lol. So I went down to Academy and the had a Nikon pro staff 3x9 by 40 for 160 with marks under the cross hairs to adjust for a longer shot.

Or they had the same scope but a 3x9 50 for 200 which just had the cross hairs no other marks but the the more I think about it ya'll are right im not hunting elephants in Africa I don't need to shoot 500 600 yards lol just gotta dream big

 

take a look at a Sightron SII series. i bought an SI 3-9x40 this spring and am very pleased with it. it's as good or better than my Prostaff. they also offer the BDC reticle, only they call it HHR. Japanese glass and a forever warranty to boot.

I've got a savage .270 mounted with a nikon 4.5-14x40. At 100 yards it shoots the tightest groups of any rifle I have, and a 250 yard shot on an antelope is a piece of cake. That's out in the wide open grasslands. In most wooded settings the 4.5-14 is a little more than a person needs.

 

Ok one more question.

3x9 40 has the BCD

3x9 50 doesn't have the BCD but it seemed to have alot better view but its $30 more.

I think having the BCD would be pretty sweet but I dont know how much id really use it.

But on the other hand is it worth $30 more for 10mm more of vision.

It is worth the money for the 10mm more. It will let more light in for those low light shots.

 

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but it sure seems like they are going to way higher scope magnification than used to be the case, resulting in larger, bulkier, heavier scopes. Anymore it seems like a 3-9 is about minimum. For deer/elk or other big game, even for long distances, I don't think a good shooter needs more than 4X magnification. Varmint hunters need more than that. Most people who have variables seem inclined to simply set them at the highest level and leave them there.

Having said that, I like a 3-9 scope a lot. I usually set mine at 4X for woods hunting, and at 6X for open country, mulies or antelope in Eastern Montana, for instance.

 

I just took a 3 x 9 off my .270. I found that as flat shooting as the .270 is , I was handicapped by not enough magnification at long ranges, 300 yards, plus.
For things like antelope at ranges of 200 -400 yards I would get up to 16 power, 500 -600 I would go with a 6 x 24 power.

More than 600 I consider out of the question. All my long ranges shots are off of bipod, crossed sticks or other rest.

 

Leupolds are good scopes but are very overpriced... On a budget I would suggest either Nikon or Burris. Good Luck!

 

bass pro has some leupolds on sale now for $169 for the 3x9x40....not sure what model tho.
