Colt M4 22LR carbine

Anybody in here have one of these 22's?

I need another gun like... well like i need another gun but looks like it would be perfect and fun for plinking. I have a ruger 10/22 with a 3-9 scope but I was thinking of modding the Ruger with a thumbhole stock and bull barrel but for the money I could just buy one of those colts and leave the Ruger the way it is.

 

I don't have one, but someone posted on GlockTalk a couple of days ago about his. He liked until didn't go into battery but still fired and the case ruptured. Seems it isn't the first of such reports. Sounds like a problem with the extractor from other reports.

 

Don't have the Colt but I tried to add a CMMG .22 conversion kit to my Bushmaster M4. Sadly it was a POS and jammed every single shot. If you already have an AR I've heard excellent things about the Spike's .22 uppers.

 

Smith and Wesson and Sig also recently came out with a .22LR AR/M4 rifle!

 

Oh man that Sig is niffty as hell..

I have been looking into these .22LR M4's for a while now. I am going to go with the M&P 15-22. I like that the slide stop is functional, I like the removable sights, and I really like the ease of field stripping and cleaning. From what I have read and seen, the bolt doesnt come out of the colt. It just seems that overall people have been having better luck with the S&W. Besides, the colt is actually made by another company, imported by UMAREX, and then the Colt name is slapped on it. I would look into the S&W more before you buy the "Colt". Just my $0.02...

if you already have the ruger 10/22 you can pick up a AR kit from cheaperthandirt that makes it look like one. they also have a kit that makes it look like a M60.

pretty much unlimited options with the ruger. I have had mine for over 10 years and had no problems with it. I use either the rem. golden bullet bulk pack or CCI if i cant find that.

semi auto .22's are picky about ammo, and lots of it is very waxy/dirty from the factory and will gum up your gun causing it to jam. federal bulk ammo is one of the worst ive used.

 

Better off to buy a real M4gery and get a .22 conversion kit for ~$150.

 

If you have the cash, hands down a better way to go.

 

I dunno packer. A dedicated 22LR will outperform and outlast a 22LR conversion for the AR. I think the conversion is great if you already own an AR, but not as an alternative for a dedicated rifle. Plus, some of us here have trouble owning an AR rifle, so these clones are great for us. When its all said and done, but both. Get a 5.56 AR AND one of the 22LR M4's. Happy shooting all.

 

I can see your point but I still think $500+ for just a .22 is crazy. I can justify to myself $150 for a conversion.

 

I see what you are saying. But you can pick one of these up for under $400. If I wanted a decent AR I am looking at spending at least $650 - $800, then $150 for a conversion. So instead of close to a G, I can get a plinker for $400. Thats all. I also wouldnt want to wear out my AR plinking 22LR. I would rather preserve it for the 5.56 or .223. Just my thoughts.

 

Something else to consider. Not sure how the Colt .22 lower is configured; if it accepts 5.56 uppers or whatnot like a normal lower but I guess one could save up for a Colt 5.56 upper later.

 

I just read on the colt website that says its a "dedicated" .22lr so Im thinking that you cant swap uppers on it?

 

None of the dedicated 22LR we have been talking about accept any UPPER. Nor can you modify the lower to accept anything other than 22lr. They are only made to look and somewhat function like the AR big brother. They cannot accept the parts to convert to a larger caliber. Also, these guns really dont accept AR accessories other than a few acceptions. The colt cant change the grip or buttstock, and I believe you cant change the handguards on the smith.
