Beautiful Springers you got there. While I'm not a hunter I do love Springers. Ours is just a family dog and the best dog ever. Had one when I was a kid. We are definitely Springer owners for life.

I'm in north central FL and have dog huntin all my life. I love it. I also have never seen a beaten or mistreated hound. Everyone I know treat their hounds just like a lap dog.

So I read through these posts and its almost comical.isn't the purpose of hunting to go out and have fun? Don't you think the hunting world would be a much smaller passion if there was only a set way to do it? there are people that love to sit in tree stands. some who prefer ground hunting. archery muzzleloader rifle pistol spear or foot trap. there are also those that pay people to find animals for them. any way you look at it saying that a form of hunting is not hunting due to your personal opinion can be considered offensive to someone who has a true passion for that type of hunting. the way I see it, if its hunting in any legal form and you enjoy doing it. hunt your heart out and love it! otherwise shut your mouth and walk away because nobody cares to hear your negative side on the subject. my dog is a shed hunter. there are no moments more thrilling then when your best buddy and hard training comes wagging back to you knowing he's done a good job carrying a big antler that he found on his own. Dogs, the best friend that always wants to make you happy!

couldn't have said it any better! i don't think one form of LEGAL hunting is better than another.
i like all hunting, but my personal choice of hunting is running rabbits with beagles. good luck for those who don't use dogs to even find a rabbit.

I have never ran dogs but I know a lot of people who do, I prefer still hunting. Although I just got a chocolate lab afew months ago and he's doing well now, 3 months old and ready for duck season!

Edit: my pup is my pet first, I don't know what I'll do when he isn't here anymore and he is my best friend. He gets to go everywhere with me and my girlfriend always gets jealous

I too hunt deer with dogs it is a very respected old custom here in NE MS. I actually didn't think there was hardly anywhere else that did it. And it is hunting because most of the time the deer escapes quite easily. I also bowhunt and still hunt with a rifle i love all of it and would never knock another persons way of hunting as wrong. And i find it far easier to shoot a deer standing still in a green field instead of it being on the move which is very fast and takes a competent shot to kill it. And if it is wounded the dogs find it almost always and it can be put out of its misery quickly. Unlike loosing the blood trail after u wounded one and end up loosing it to the coyotes. I respect and enjoy all hunting methods.

I've hunted mtn lions behind dogs. Absolute most strenuous thing I have ever done in my life. If you think you're in good shape, go try to keep up with 3 hounds in 18" of hard frozen snow That you fall through about every other step with a few inches of powder on top. That will humble you real quick. I did that once, didn't get a cat. I hunt birds with my GSP and my black lab. Seeing my GSP locked up on a bird is an awesome sight.

I have hunted with dogs once in my life can say been there, done that, and probably won't do it again simply because I didn't get to shoot the deer. Lol:D Now that being said I would love to go duck hunting been I get my Lab/Pit mix back. She's a big, stocky baby. As for my 4 legged furry daughter, she is just a broad muscle chested pit/blue heeler/italian greyhound mix aka my MUTT!!!! Both that happen to sleep in a queen bed with my wife and me. Mutt sleeps in the pillows, lab sleeps on the other side of my wife holding her all night making sure she don't go no where!

Is there an upland or duck dog that is calm enough to be happy in a home with a small (50' x 150') fenced back yard? I would love a GSP but couldn't deal with one in this small space. I was thinking brittany but I hear they're pretty hyper. No interest in a lab - everyone I know has one.

My GSP is great and calm as long as she gets her regular exercise and stays in routine. If she ever gets a little to rowdy she goes in her crate. My suggestion is find a breeder that breeds calm GSPs and wait for a new litter. That's what I did. Here's the breeder I got mine from
