Wal-Mart Remington...

So I found an 870 Wingmaster at Wal-Mart for about $270. I haven't seen it that cheap anywhere else, even used. Why is it so cheap, and is there anything wrong with buying a gun from Wal-Mart?

Nothing wrong with buying from Wally World, but at that price I'm betting you get a plastic stock.

I bought my shot gun at walmart. Its a remmington 870 i think. I boght it about 8 years ago and have put a few hundred rounds threw it and never had a problem with it.

 

That's what I thought, but when I talked to a few people they gave me a look like "You shop at Wal-Mart, and not through a gun shop/supplier?"

It's always better to support the local mom and pop shops. Just tell them you've seen the average price around for 275 and they will normally make a deal with you.

 

Walmart sells both the Rem 870 and the Moss 590 cheaper than gun shops. They must hardly have any mark up on them.

It's a good place to buy a Weatherby Vanguard too.

 

Wal-Mart has cheap prices because they buy in bulk, nothing wrong with that. Their selection however is very slim so if your looking for something "special" that's when I look at a mom and pop or a specialty gun shop.

 

Hmmm. An 870 wingmaster? You sure it's not an express? The wingmaster is usually going to run you closer to $600. Make sure it's not a youth gun either. Also, there is a russian company Baikal that is sold under the Remington name. Sounds too good to be true. But buying at walmart isn't a big deal, I would rather buy from a mom and pop, but a good deal is a good deal.

 

Also, if it's a Special Field (matted version of Wingmaster) this would be a normal price give or take a few bucks 279-329.00. The quality of the Special Field is not up to Remington Wingmaster caliber. Typically the Wingmster would have a high gloss finish.

 

like everyone said, read the print on the reciever to find out what it is. i have seen wallyworld mismark them before. my guess is that it is an 870 express that got incorrectly marked. that being said though, a remington is a remington no matter where it is bought and they have quite a reputation in the shotgun business. in fact, i just bought a rem. express 3" mag for 250 from a pawn shop and shot a turkey with it today.

 

There is a strong likely hood that it is a 'factory second' that Walmart got at a reduced price from Remington. Structurally the gun is probably fine, but I am betting there is something slightly "off" with it...most likely with the fit/finish.

 

Well actually guns are not just guns.. ALL Remington rifles bought from Wallyword are made 3rd run and long off a drill bit. The best guns are made from a drill bit on the first run then second. Walmart gets the 3-whatever they can get out of a bit. So the more guns made from a bit the worse they shoot. You can get lucky every now and then. But for the most part it is crap shoot. I am sure they have the same deal on shotguns but havent seen the paperwork. That is how they get the best deals.... With Remington anyway.. Maybe not with others but it is with them..

Take a MinnKota trolling motor apart from wallyworld and one from mom and pop or bass pro and they are TOTALLY different quality parts. waaaay more plastic from wallyworld..

 

If you look closely at the Express you will notice that it is cheapened all around versus the Wingmaster. I bought a 12-gauge Express a few years back after hunting with a 20-gauge Wingmaster for thirty-five years. The 870 Express is still a tough gun but it has more stamped parts and the machining isn't as fine. I got it at a local sporting goods store for $300. I really can't see paying twice that amount for the Wingmaster -- and the pheasants don't seem to care.

 

These are CNC manufactured firearms, I don't understand what the difference would be, they might run entire shifts with the same end mill and drill bits for the receivers. QC would have to do percentage inspections during the shift to ensure they meet specs. The tools would be changed according to a set schedule to make sure the tool wear would not get you a bad receiver. If your talking about the barrel they don't use a drill on the barrel for the final honing and lapping process, its done with special honing stones to remove any defects or tool marks left from the barrel manufacturing process and bring it to within specifications. After these steps they are gauged, proofed and stamped. All barrels are generic at this point The Express are then parkerized, the Wingmasters are blued and the Marine Magnums are nickleplated. The only difference is the finishes on the weapons.
At $270 buy that shotgun. 870s are the most prolific and rugged shotguns ever produced, foreign manufacturers have copied the design and many use it in their armed forces as well as police. I consider mine to be the jeep of all my firearms, you can take small game with it, ducks geese turkeys, screw in a slug choke and go for deer. Load up some buck and ball and shoot the zombies.

 

Actually, in my case the special field or express appears to have looser tolerances than the wingmaster. As with many guns their are different grades. I don't believe they sell lesser grades to Walmart, it may just be that Walmart choses to purchase the lower grade and toleranced firearm. Keeps the prices down and the people coming back. Just bought ammo there yesterday. Didn't see lower quality in that either.

Dude! buy that shotty,use the saved money to buy a case of shells and a case of claybirds and go shoot the hell out of it.
