However, if you are a LEO (as your icon suggests) you are well-trained, which may not be the case for the average homeowner. It might be better for some scared lady's potential attacker to hear her shotgun slide actuate from the bedroom and then think better about opening the door than to be surprised by her sitting in bed holding a handgun. The main thing about shotguns, however, is safety to other people in the house. A non-frangible bullet can go clear through a house if it doesn't hit a stud and easily kill your kid or a neighbor by accident if you miss. Also, many "intruders" are actually family members or guests who are coming home at unexpected times.

again...im not discounting the shotgun as a fine weapon for sitting in your bedroom and protecting yourself

i just really dont like the idea of giving away my position or letting them know that im awake or aware they are in the residence

i also dont consider how much wall penetration is possible when selecting a weapon

when i pull the trigger i intend to hit my target

if my round is not powerful enough to penetrate some drywall...how is it going to slice thru the knucklehead and stop the threat?

Recent events have put my doubts on shotguns. My wifes best friend was a victim in a shooting a few weeks ago. She was shot at two times. Once in the arm and another in the hip, the pellets are still in her but she is fine, The shooter was about 10-12 steps away from her. He also shot at another girl pretty damn close, she put her hand in front of her face to shield herself, well her hand is pretty much gone but she will live.
The only person the shooter killed was a guy that he put the end of the barrel into his chest and pulled the trigger..

For my HD rounds I have 165 gr hollow points in my .40
In the closet is my .22 with a 25 round clip of hollow points that the wife will use
under the bed is my AR with a 30 round mag of hornady TAP incase of Z day

I am a believer in Speer GoldDot bullets.
I found a factory load for 45ACP with 200gr Gold Dot bullets that I haven't chrono'd but the hand chrono thinks it's about 850fps. very soft shooting and allows easy followups.
    I bought some 45ACP +p with 185gr bullets and it's ridiculously violent.
Much higher/sharper recoil impulse than any 230gr I've ever shot.
I loaded one in the bottom of a mag for a buddy...last shot would be 'hotter'....he couldn't believe it....and this is out of full size 1911's.
I also use 38sp +p Gold Dots out of my 357 for the same reason...soft recoil and better followup shots.

    back to bone stock.
same here. but my SWAT brother just have me another magazine loaded with some SPEER ammo. he says they are far superior to the hydroshoks...who knows. whatever.

as for home defense..DEFENSE is the key word here in cali. i am gonna install an exterior door on either my bathroom or master bedroom. someone breaks in, run, lock ourselves in, call cops..arm myself. there isnt a single item in my house worth death. fool tries to get me, then and only then can i legally kill him. which i would do immediately.

in texas, i had to get the gun twice. both cases, the guy ran.

Cor-Bon seems to me to be MUCH harder hitting than most other defensive loads. Try some tests yourself. A cheap test in lew of not having ballistic gelatin is to get some older honeydew mellons. I know, I know...not a scientifically equal due to a number of factors. I have done this test for a bunch of friends and the results are amazing. Plus the mess on the ground is not something you have to pick up (big advantage). You can order COR-BON directly as well if your local shop doesn't carry it. Just make sure to practice with what you carry. The difference in recoil is as dramatic as that on the business end.

In today's twisted up society I'd almost be afraid to shoot an attacker with a specialty bullet as I'd probably get sued by either him or his family for causing undue suffering or some such.

for range and plinking ammo its fine but I wouldnt use it for SHTF or self defense ammo.
I keep a 30 mag loaded with 55gr horady TAP for my AR just incase shit really hits the fan:D

for HD ammo I feel alot better spending a few extra bucks to know I have quality ammo that WILL work when I need it

Just curious. Where do you guys get all these specialty self defense rounds? Online? I know around here it's hard to find .45 ammo so you pretty much have to stock up on whatever Walmart or the Mom and Pop have that day, if they have any. For my .40 cal it's a little bit better but even with that, if the store has hollow points or defensive rounds its usually just one type, not a selection to choose from. Sorry if this got off topic, wasn't trying to hi-jack here.

To bring it back on topic I keep a magazine loaded with 135 grain hollow points for the 40 and #4 bird shot for the Mossy.

There is a very good chance that you will be sued!
If all things are done according to the law and court and you are not charged while defending yourself more often than not the attacker or family will sue you.

Right or wrong it will cost you a lot of money to defend yourself and in the end if justice prevails and you win you will have huge legal costs in defending yourself.

If for what ever reason you lose??? you get the idea.

These are just a few of the many things you have to consider when you choose to defend yourself with a firearm.

It is a great responsibility. Is it worth it?
That is what you need to decide.

    I have made my choice.
