Personal Defense ammo....

i honestly use whatever i buy to go shooting aslong as its not american eagle ammo
for personal defense i dont think it matters that much either way the guy is not gonna live through 9 rounds of 45acp no matter what bullet it is

 

HEAVY loads, Super expanding semi-jacketed hydrashoks +P+. One shot to put em down, followed by 15 more to stop the threat. And my fur coated razor blade to eat the body.

I don't know what brand/kind weight....but hollowpoints for home defense (9mm).

Everything else we use light weight regular ammo jackets or without. We tried heavier stuff in both our handgun & shot guns - and it's just too much.
My husband has shoulder surgery last year.... and he thinks it's because of the previous summers of shooting trap/skeet every weekend. For handguns, that heavy shit stings!!!

 

I use the Hornady Critical Defense. It seems to work really well in ballistics gel tests. Honestly, 9mm, 40, 45- whatever...you are not in the fight after you get shot. I go for the heavier bullets, but I carry a Glock 26, so the weight difference in the 9mm is minimal.

 

I just keep my .410 out of the safe, with a couple 00 shells near by.

 

Currently I have Winchester Supreme Elite 9mm +P 124gr. JHP Bonded......

Are they the best? I hope I never have to find out.
Do I think putting 2-3 of these in a bad guy will stop him? Yes.

No offense, but when the hell did most of you ever have to fend of an armed attacker? If you want a home defense gun then get yourself a shotgun and load it with bird-shot. At any range that you really are in danger it will kill and it is far less likely to go through a wall and take out a family member or a neighbor. A pump shotgun is good for two reasons: the first is that you can keep the chamber empty for safety purposes; the second is, due to TV and movies, just about everyone knows the sound of a pump-action shotgun -- just pumping the thing will probably result in a prowler getting the hell out of there. Don't think bird-shot can kill? In my work as a paramedic I never saw a close-range bird-shot-loaded shotgun blast that didn't kill.

Edit: Oh, yes we did have one guy who got shot in the leg with a shotgun slug, it didn't kill him but it sure did stop him, as it broke his femur. Conversely, I once had a guy who had had a full clip of 9mm shot into both of his legs stand up and walk to the ambulance.

 

I have never had to use a firearm for defense thankfully.
I do agree that bird shot very close can kill someone, but that would not be what I would use. The old guys at "The Box of Truth have done some great work on loads and penetration which I find very interesting.

I will not depend on the racking of the slide in a defensive situation to scare away a person that is threatining me or family members. I am sure you have run in to many folks that may be zipped up on various types of drugs and cannot be depened upon to react in a reasonable way.

Just my way of thinking, hope like hell I never have to defend myself with a firearm but if I do I will not offer any advantage or sound warning to the attacker.

I keep my 1911 with 230 gr remington golden sabers in my nightstand

 

i keep federal hydra-shok's in my 9mm. they are 147 grain.

 

I prefer heavier weights.

Federal HST in 147gr flavor in my Glock 19 that I carry all day every day.

Federal HST is getting hard to get though...guess Federal is really enforcing their LEO sales only policy. If I can't get any more HST I'll probably go back to something like Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger T, or Remington Golden Saber. CorBon kicks ass but way too pricey for my taste.



Yeah, I stippled my G19 so my sweaty hands could get a better grip on it.

 

the G19 is a fine weapon, its what I keep in my truck. I love Wet Okole for offering the "CCW Holster option" on the drivers seat.

 

I reload, and I keep what I call a bear load in my 44mag. I have shot deer at 40 yards with this load, and they drop like a sac of spuds. It is a 300grain hornady XTP, with 20grains of w-296 behind it. You will not walk out of my house if it hits you.
