Ruger Mk III Issue found

This is not uncommon.
Have you ever had it apart?
When you takedown a Ruger, it is difficult to seat the upper barrel assembly back to nominal spec relative to the lower, which aligns the magazine, and controls the angle that the ammo feeds to the ramp.
Hard to describe, easier to show.
I would either send it back or try to adjust the distance forward/back of the upper receiver.
Rugers are tough if you take them down.

 

This happened even before I took it apart for the first time. It actually was worse I think before I took it apart because I hadnt oiled it up at all. But I had put about 2000 rds through it unjamming every couple of rds and finally got tired of doing it so sent it back to ruger to fix.

 

I got word from my gunsmith friend that he got it back from ruger today. He fired several magazines through it without flaw. Ruger replaced the barrel, Feeder ramp, extractor, firing pin, magazine release, and perhaps one other thing. The best thing about it is, it fires flawlessly like a Ruger should!

I am in the market for a mark iii hunter the 6.88'' barrel.

What model do you have?

 

I went to the range and took my fiancé with me( she is mighty with both a 9 mm and .22) put about 200 rds in the mk3 before the grit was casusing it to keep from ejecting casings but no jams so that was great! I have the nk3 hunter but have the short I guess its 4.5" it's very accurate it wasn't bad to take down but and it wasn't even hard to put back together. I had a bunch of people tell me that they were hard to put back together, it was strange but I figured it out.

 

Do you have the 22/45 hunter mark iii or the mark iii hunter ?

I am startin to think I want the 4.5''? Its got to be just as accurate as the longer barrel? How long were the shots you and your fiancé comfortably making?

What do you plan do use the gun for? If you just want a range/plinking gun and aren't worried about longer range shots (i.e. anything past 50 yards) the shorter barrel should be fine. If you plan to use it for hunting or ever want to put a scope on it for longer shots I would go with the longer barrel. Either choice will give you a solid gun that should last you a lifetime.

Now I don't have the mkIII. But i do have a old walther p22 and a new walther p22. Different ammo effects the gun differently. Depending on how the nose of the round is manufactured will depend on how well it feeds. On the old model the barrel come to an abrupt start. On the new version they shaved it at an angle so the nose of the round slides in very nicely. I only bring this up because gun manufactures adapt their production model. I would have though that from the mkII that would have gotten this right. Maybe google some mods for the gun. Im sure you can fix it yourself if they say that nothing is wrong. Good luck!

 

Check the www.rimfirecentral.com web site on any question about .22's. I have a MKIII stainless hunter with 6 7/8 barrel. Try as many different types of ammo as your budget will allow. I own more than 20 .22's and each one shoots best with a different type of ammo. And it also depends on the weather on the type of ammo the works best. But I still have more of the cheap stuff than thing else. Most of my guns do just fine with the cheaper ammo. The only ammo I don't buy is the cheap Remington bulk boxes. My favorite is Federal Ammunition Champion and Game-shok. My ruger 10-22 that I use to hunt with works best with the cheaper Federal -Champion bulk

 

I have the 22/45 hunter with the short barrel she was shooting at a distance of probably 50 ft or so. She was shooting at various distances, it was her first time shooting anything ever, and she still had a very tight grouping. (this is the only picture I have)


BTW, with the feeder ramp fixed it is taking any ammo I feed into it.

 

Thats bad I really like the fluted barrel! I am gettin one this week, or as least ordering one.

 

I dont know if other people's did or not but mine also came with a rail system to throw a red dot sight up there which I might do in coming months. It was expensive when I got it though. I paid as much for the 22 as I did for the 9mm sitting next to it.

I'm curious on the solution to this issue. Could it be a poorly adjusted mag release , not locking the mag to mate with the feed ramp?

 

Nice, now get a suppressor. Best gun-related purchase I ever made. 22 suppressors are a ton of fun.

 

No my gunsmith said that everything was fine. He said that his contact at ruger actually said that the feed ramp was too long. He said that they had to replace almost the whole upper receiver.
