Shed hunting?

Wondering if there are any other shed hunters out there in TacomaWorld. I like to get out over the winter just to get in the fresh air. Anyone else into it?

How do you hunt for sheds and what's the bag limit?

 

Which one would you shoot first?

 

Been hunting deer for about 35 years. Do not really hunt for sheds but in my travels in the woods have found only 3 sheds in my life. Found the first one coyote hunting in March years ago, the other two scouting early fall . Farther north where the deer yard up in the winter is where most sheds are found.

OH, I see you are from Canada, you have a better chance than I at finding some nice sheds !

 

Ive never been but I know a boy who found the skull with antlers of a buck that scored #3 in South Carolina

My dad has found a few in his time out in the woods, Ive never found any. From what Ive learned is that mice, hogs, and other animals will eat the sheds. I guess they have protein in them

 

generally rodents will get them before the people do, and I actually give my dog most of the antlers off my deer, he loves them as something to chew on. so I assume coyotes/wolves would do the same thing.

 

Did this growing up in Southern Colorado, never knew there was a name for it thought it was just collecting antlers. In the right market you can a pretty good price for deer and elk antlers. Use to collect them while gathering cows and riding fences, stash them in the brush somewhere then come pick them up later in the truck. Thought I was exceptionally lucky when I would find a matching pair of antlers, that came off the same buck or bull.

 

Yea ive been the past two years and havent had any success, all i found was a doe skull.

 

I take my son out and it's basically hiking and if we find some..great!
It's gotten pretty competitive around here.
Been doing it for 4 seasons now.

 

i stop on the road and cut the heads off of roadkill bucks then take their antlers later. does that count?

m always lookin though.only found a spike point one time a few years ago

It is a challenge to find them before smaller animals chew them up and is a great way to stay in shape over the winter. I also use it to watch the horn growth from year to year. It's also good practice with the camera as you never know what you'll see when you're out.
