My grandfather bought an 1942 M1 Garand about a year ago and has never shot it. Me and a buddy are planning on taking him to shoot monday, what extra precautions/maintenance should be done to the rifle because of the age. I looked at it for the first time today and the action seems very smooth and the rifle seems to be in great shape with out disassembly. The other question is its stamped 30cal, but ive seen videos on youtube of people labeling it as 30 cal but shooting 30-06 through it. For the garand is that considered the same round? thanks

found out it is in fact the same as 30-06, any suggestions on cleaning/maintenance for pre shooting. Or just go take it apart look at it and if everything doesnt seem broken fire away.
