Many people have, too late to play that card. Whether you got safety before or not, you'd have to redo all your stuff for recon anyhow. As long as you're within the law you shouldn't have any problems, garden edging around fenders and such.

Just got the truck last week brand new so really nothing to be done to it til i get the lift installed..No knowledge of the topic before i left for deployment.. only finding out about the new standards now.. Throwing some flares on should suffice though.. What you mean to late to play that card? What card am I trying to play? I joined this forum for helpful information and ideas not for people to be fucking assholes.

It was a '04 Stock Dodge Dakota.. Either they changed the law or the safety guy really didn't like the Raiders.. hahaha..

I've got quite a few mods on my truck.. 6'' lift, 285's m/t, flowmasters, retrofit projectors, jungle fenders.. When I put the components together for my truck, I kept them with in recon guidelines.. bumper at max legal limit for the 01's weight class.. tires tread tucked under the fenders..

I dont know if Maui has recon yet, but I figured that If i stayed with in those guide lines I would have no problem passing safety on Maui. As for the projectors.. the 01's - 04's required no modification to the housing itself. From what i've heard:
~HID in reflector bowls are illegal.
~Modifying headlight assembles such as cutting or I've heard painting are illegal.
~HiD in projectors are legal because they can focus the output or else all BMW, Caddys, Mercedes, would all be Illegal.

The only thing i did was melt the glue, installing the projector without cutting anything, and re applied the glue.

I seen some Tacomas with insane lifts and wonder how there gonna pass.. one white 1st gen had a 12'' lift on what must of been 35sx14.. if not bigger, so really no clue as to what there going to do...

Im gonna take it in as is and see if its passes.. Ill be really inquisitive and try to take a video of what there doing since there is pretty little info on what there looking for now. Worse comes to worse, ill just swap back in my old light housings, as that would be really be the only thing questionable, or they have no knowledge of . Sure as hell ain't taking my "Eddie would go" sticker off!

its fucking sickening...i havent had couple of my trucks legal for a few years...just no can get em legal. no sense pay several hundred to only drive it a few times a year when im already registering 3 other cars. it pisses me off why some people have to go infringe on others lives. I mean, this is how the government wants me to live....with all these fishing and hunting laws...it would be better to just get ebt...free food, spend less on gas, free time to do other things. governemtn doesnt want me driving, raises taxes for registration, raises safety check prices, makes new laws or enforces stupid ones, so guess what....they like keep the hele on prices down, fuck you public transit only benefits a handful...you think hele on going let me on with 2-3 dogs, bucket of fish/tako, pfft please.

you see, more better if I just let the US take over the aina, let me become a fat immobile Hawaiian living off ss, disability, and snap....have no car, pay dolla for bus, if I like make money all I need is an aquarium license, rape the reef, even use scuba tanks..hahahah, that shits legal.

naw, fuck em, I like take a stand on shit. I like hunt to survive...I like fish to survive...I like drive my truck to do both of those things!

ohhh and looking at that new sticker...it looks cheap. state of hawaii cheaped out on safety check stickers in 2006/07. we called it the "thin" stickers, because they felt thinner and those ones faded within a few months. yellow 07s were being recalled mid 2006 because they faded so quickly. fkn roll.

oh and thats not really a deterrrent if people just wanna drive..they can still run the stickers. figure if a cop is two car lengths behind you...you think hes gonna be able to make out the wording with the print being so small? also, in before all this data gets into the wrong hands.

cant be offended when you are continuously being screwed. I try to live life with as little as possible including being not independent on government...when I choose to do things and cant do it, due to laws and other things I dont believe in.

but back on topic....no need safety checks, turn in license plates and just keep insurance if you wanna cruise the high rollas.

as long as you can get recon you should be cool.

I hope you didnt do the R/C Truck offset tho..wont pass if your tires are sticking out past the fenders. Gonna need flares to cover the tires if it sticks out.

those are the types of trucks i was talking about. I see tons of 198xish toyotas with 15" wide wheels looking like lifesized R/C trucks

I have nothing against any of these. Personal preference and freedom to do what you want with your truck. I'm just wondering whats gonna happen to them. Seems like a whole lot of people gonna be affected.

Maybe over there, but not on oahu, i see these types of trucks daily on the roads all over the place. I didn't mean to get you worked up brah. It was just a random thought....

I wish there was no such thing as recon, but i do think safety is needed as people who are not enthusiasts like us, dont give a shit about their cars. The general public can be retards when it comes to cars.

There are cars in the parking lot at my job that have bald tires with cords showing. If there was no safety check these people would not get new tires till they have a blow out (Or it rains and they hydroplane), crashing, possibly killing themselves AND maybe someone unlucky enough to be driving near them.

One thing is right, we get screwed in the end

Chill out a bit man... this should have been no surprise.
You signed into this forum in September, and this:
http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/haw...check-law.html
was posted here in the Hawaii regional on September 26th... couple of weeks before you ordered the parts.

Good luck and I hope you can get it cleared. We have our own issues here in California, though it is primarily smog regulations (if I need to replace my cat, it's gonna' be $200 more for the California approved version even though it is identical to the one I could get in AZ).

And thank you for your service.

Lived in Maui in the early 90's for a few years while working on the grand hyatt and Ritz Carlton Kahana, bought some old POS F250 at a C and H auction, changed the plugs, put in a new battery and off i went, never registered it or got a safety inspection and drove that thing for well over a year. It died on me one day at Makena beach when i went to go Body surfing, i just left it where it sat, grabbed my churchhill's fins { old school blue and black } and got a ride back to Kihei.
Have not been back to Maui since 92, it must have changed a lot in that time.
Aloha bruddah's.

Yeah to me a lot has changed since 92 here think there is about 100% more street lights and it's not as "lay back" as it use to when u could ride a dirt bike down by the harbor without no hassle now you can even drive around in there

I had a great time there, lived in Kihei on a koki street, then moved to Maui Meadows.
At first i did all the finish interior and exterior on the big condo project across from charlie brown's beach.
I never remember the cops messing with me about the truck with no little sticker on the left side of the rear bumper, and the truck was a rusted heap. had holes in the floor that you could see the pavement as you drove, and one of the bed sides was hanging by a few rusty strands. But the truck got me to Hookipa to windsurf, and to Makena to body surf, what more could you ask for from a truck that $250.00 at auction.
How is Makena these days ? that was such a fun body surfing spot when it was hitting just right. Loved that spot, and back then, there were no hotels out that far.
When i was there, they were just starting to build homes off the piilani highway just above Kihei.
Going to make it back one day.

Nice posts...who's the asshole now??? Chill out if you want anyone here to help in the slightest. You might also note that many TW members have also spent over a year (3 in my case) in the middle east, not to mention at least a few disabled vets, so we probably don't give a crap about your sob story. My guess (based on your immaturity) is that my first combat tour was while you were in middle school. My next one begins next month so IDGAF. You can "play that card" and seek pity somewhere else. This is a Tacoma forum, not veteran's forum.

Back to your original rant. Ask for help without the attitude and you'll get the answers you're looking for. Call TW members assholes and you'll get no help from anyone. The vehicles that will have issues are the 12" lifts with 15" wheels and tires that stick out 18" from the fender. Assuming you're going with a standard 3" lift, tires, etc, that will pass recon, there's nothing for you to worry about. At the top of the Hawaii page, the only sticky listed is for Hawaii Recon Q&A. If you went crazy with your lift and didn't seek out basic info on recon, that's not nobody's fault but yours. New inspection rules were a hot topic here before you even joined so the info was available before you first posted.

I highly recommend that you pick up your safety sticker bracket and get your truck reinspected before you get your lift installed on Tuesday. Then, at least you'll have a year to ensure you're legal and get the recon taken care of. Good luck!

can you only get a safety sticker if the car/truck is completely stock or as delivered from the manufacturer ?

No, you can have minor modifications and pass safety. If you change suspension or have oversized tires along with a few other mods, you have to get a separate one-time "recon" inspection. After that recon, you can pass safety every year as long as your mods match those listed on your recon form.

Maybe Maui has different county rules? I can paint my back window black if I wanted to.

If I remember correctly, no modification to the vehicles lighting systems are allowed. None. No black bezelz, hid upgrades, projectors.. Just see what you can get away with! Got plenty cops with hid upgrades over here.
