Is it actual pain or soreness? How long have you been lifting and what is considered heavy to you?

I know many of you do not have a personal trainer... not that it really matters if you do or not, but I want to share my story with you guys and my PT - Shawn.

I came to Shawn to better myself in the lifting world for power lifting. I was starting to question my form and techniques and I needed an expert. Shawn participated it Strongman several times with brian shaw, savickas, etc...all the big names.

I was under his PT from January of 2014 until April of 2015. Since I started with him my 3 big lift total was at 815. I am currently at 1105 now. I started at 182 body weight and I am up to 208. I trained with him at least 3 times a week during this time... learning ungodly amounts of information and still to this day... could learn more. The guy was a huge goof ball... Loved comic books... video games... basically a giant nerd. You'd never believe it unless you saw it haha. My favorite thing about him was that he would help anyone, it didn't matter... old...young... fat... female... what ever. He was never arrogant about his size and he just wanted people to learn the right and safe way.

Insert obligatory pictures of giant man:

Anyway... His wife found a new job where he has been looking to move and he finally made the move there last week. I will say it wasn't easy... There were many many sad people to see him go... lots a tears shed haha. I will admit I shed some tears. (dem feelz brah) :(

It's back to being on my own again, it's hard... It was awesome just coming to the gym and not having to think about what exercises... reps... not loading my own weights... or unloading...etc. Always doing something crazy and different day in and day out. I don't think there was a single day that I had that was easy. I miss that.

Said picture with trainer on final day.

For sure the spine/tendons and all that not the muscle. I'm 6'1" 220. Heavy for me is squat 5x5 for 325. Deads 5x5 405. Squat form is usually pretty on point but deads I'm a little iffy.

Just gunna take a step back from deads for a bit and switch to front squats since they kept me a bit more upright.

Flares up pretty good during Hunting season from sitting in a tree for hours on end too

    Better than me.
I'm 6'2'' 243lbs and my mile is pretty steady at 7:00-7:10 pace.

Yea, could very likely be from deep squating, then lots of sitting the following days.
When it's exam time, I'll sneak away to the gym, then return to a desk for 10 more hours. The next day my back kills. Once I start moving around more, it feels fine. Just gets super tight after working out then not moving.

That's why I hate leg days during my work week....legs then sitting in the car for 10 hour shift isn't ideal.

Yea It's not like I threw out my back or anything. Just feel the discs are compressed in knots. Probably should stretch more, might use the foam roller?

Holy hell do I love lunges. Started with 135 after a 4 sets of 185# front squats. I worked down to body weight. Loaded to bar with 135 to do deads right after but could feel every muscle ready to ball up and cramp.

My boss has a hunting pack he wants to sell so I'll be taking that from him tonight. Gonna load it up with a comfortable 45lbs Thursday night and see how it feels on a light paced 5-10 miles. I would prefer an external frame but of the price is right I won't complain much.

I can't wait until I can do lunges again :pout: Gonna try to do my regular leg day today. I'm sick of the damn machines.

Yesterday, I incorporated some of those new "top-rated workouts" I posted last week and they got me sore! Always good to change it up

    dumbbell bench press: 3 sets of 15 w/ 80, 75, 70 lb dumbbells
    hammer strength chest press: 2 sets of 15, 12 @ 230 lbs, 180 lbs
    v-grip lat-pulldowns: 3 sets of 12, 15, 15 @ 200, 180, 160 lbs
    v-grip t-bar rows: 2 sets of 15 @ 115, 90 lbs (this shit lit my lats up!)
    standing dumbbell shoulder press: 3 sets of 15, 12, 9 w/ 60 lb dumbbells
trap rope face pulls: 2 sets of 15 @ 170, 160 lbs (Aaron, you were right: I felt this shit a lot more than dumbbell shrugs :spy: )
spider curls: 3 sets of 15, 12, 10 @ 75 lbs (I haven't done these in years and I forgot how much harder they are than preacher curls)
reverse-grip straight bar pulldowns: 3 sets of 15, 12, 11 @ 160 lbs (the weight is much harder to move with a reverse-grip)

My chest is already a little sore, but I'm sure as the day goes on, some of that DOMS will set in from the new workouts

I love when I switch things up. Come summer I will start working with dumbbells more again. Right now that's where most the students are at and it's a pain to get a solid workout in. I recently switched from doing incline bench first to doing decline. That made a huge difference in how much I felt the chest vs traps. In a few weeks I'll switch to weighted dips first.
