Intense foot pain

So I ran the Bay to Breakers yesterday which is about 7.5 miles. Let me say by no means am I a serious runner but I ran about 6.5 miles of the race. The shoes I was running in are slightly new and slightly broken in so I dont know if it was the cause or part of it but anyways I digress.

So about the last .5 mile I had foot pain on the outside of my left foot towards the heel but ran through it just figured I was tired. Finished and felt good (thats what she said) and as I'm walking around getting freebies from vendors I had a very sharp pain all of a sudden and was very difficult to walk on. Did the whole rest, ice blah blah blah when I got home and no real help, saw a chiropractor today about it he said it doesnt seem like a stress fracture or anything but I've never felt so much pain in my foot. I dread getting up and walking/limping to the bathroom so my question is has anyone dealt with this or are there any runners/doctors/EMT's/geniuses, etc. out there that have any suggestions or ideas as to what's going on.

All the toes look fine? Dislocated a toe perhaps? Or tore something?

Did you feel a "pop" or anything, or was it a gradual onset of pain?

I was thinking heel spurs too as I have had them during cross country season and they hurt. I just don't know how they would suddenly come on at the end of race.

Consult a physician or physical therapist. No one can tell you anything meaningful without an in-person examination. Especially not the internet.

Didnt really feel anything significant at one moment it just gradually started hurting. on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd put it at around an 8 or 9. really hard to walk on.

I would guess heel spur or Planter Fasciitis... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0004438/
I just had the same thing happen like a month ago.
Woke up the next morning and thought I fractured something in my heel.
Doc told me to take advil and get some insoles (which have help dramatically)
and do some stretches/exercises

Nuroma ( spelling? )
I have a nerve in the ball of my foot that has developed a fiberous kind of encasement that I have had everything up to surgery on so far.
It is not painfull enough to get that done for me yet.
I is a noticeable ball kind of a thing that I can feel.
I am not a runner but carried a lot of weight and worked on my feet for many years so I am not sure what caused it but you may look into that.
Good luck on the problem.

^^^^only way I can really describe it is a fracture basically. I've been wanting insoles for awhile, might deal with that tomorrow since ill be seeing the same chiropractor tomorrow and he can tell me what I need.

I wouldn't mess with insoles or orthotics. They serve very little purpose. This article from the NYT actually does a good job (for a major media outlet) of breaking it down on honest terms:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/18/he...on/18best.html

Basically, medical science is starting to see in the research what should've been obvious from the beginning: Everybody has different feet, therefore the same orthotics/insoles will NOT have the same effect for every person, even if they have been diagnosed with the same condition. This is also partially because a single condition can have many many different causes, and knowing the cause is more important than knowing the problem when it comes to finding a solution to orthopaedic problems.

See your MD. Get a referral for physical therapy. Find a physical therapist in your area with a DPT degree - Doctor of Physical Therapy. Even better if they hold an OCS (Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist) board certification.

This could be a LOT of things. You need a medical professional in front of your that can put hands on, and combine your personal history with clinical examination findings and their knowledge and clinical judgement. Random internet guessing won't get you anywhere.
