The hips and belly are one of the first places that fat is deposited, and of course, the last place it comes off.

You can not "spot reduce"... the body will store fat the way it was built to store fat and you can't change that.

What you can do, through crunches, is improve the muscle tone of the abdominal wall. Stand in front of a mirror and strongly tense your abs and watch what happens to the gut.
The "roll" will still be there, but your muscles will pull the organs in tight so the appearance won't be "enhanced" by the distention.
Crunches will tone the muscles so they will be naturally "tight" and you won't have to consciously focus to "suck in your gut"

I didn't read the whole thread, so forgive me if i'm out of line.

But here are a few things..

you need to work on gaining muscle. In building muscle, you will shred some serious fat.
You don't need to work on losing weight, you need to work on getting a shape, and the way to do that is building the muscles up. If you push hard with the weight, your body will be burning calories when you are sitting!!
The fact that your job requires some hard work doesn't count, your body is so used to the same movements, it's not doing anything special for you at this point.

here's what I mean about getting in shape, and the size difference between muscle and fat.

Next thing you need to do is stop being a pussy about your "diet" pop habit, you are probably holding 10lbs of extra sugars just from that, and 3 a day? that's ridiculous.
Quit drinking pop cold turkey, it's not that hard!

Also, get to the gym. you can tell yourself as much as you want that you are going to work out at home, but you will accomplish a lot more at the gym, as there are no distractions, and you are forced to work out, and will be inspired by the other people sweating lbs. and you better sweat! thats the easiest way to know you are getting the job done.

I'm sure I come across as an asshole here, but I don't pussy foot around when it comes to getting in shape. It's not easy, we all have to work for it, but if you want it you've got to go get it, you get one chance to live this life, so live it right.

Sugar. Look at the sugar content in the soda 1 gram is one packet of sugar yes a little packet one might shake in ice tea. At 6 feet + your weight is not out of line but fat is heavy gravity will accentuate the fat. Eat well stay out of any thing fast food and look at the sugar content on the label of any thing you pick up. I can preach a little bit I'm 66 6 foot and weight 165# I don't work out in gym but I'm in the woods most every day with a chain saw and I'll drink water before I'll get near any thing that resembles soda.

sorry to post again but I love this stuff and I have to!

X2 on the water^ and I would also limit the serving size of each meal, a couple minutes before you eat, slam a FULL glass of water, then have another glass during your meal, and another after your meal, it seems like a lot, but you'll feel so much more full, and wont eat more than your body needs.

Okay... if OP can post embarrassing photos, so can I...

Here I was working in Alaska in February 2000...

This was taken in 2004 when I started going to the gym.
I was about 225 here.

This was about 6 months later. 50% of the "work" was eliminating fast food and controlling my diet (as opposed to "going on a diet").
40% was spending 1 hour a night on the treadmill maintaining my heart rate between 145 and 165.
I was about 185-190 when this was taken.

Yes... it's a "joke" picture... someone started a thread on a bodybuilding forum "Post up your 6-pack abs".
But the point is... those are the same size and brand jeans I was wearing in Alaska. 36 waist! They fit with 6 bottles stuffed in there, and they were NOT tight!

And in 2006. I'm still pretty much at this point, stabilized around 200lbs, but I'm no longer working out, I just don't have the time/time management. Long hours at work, and when I get home, I have a choice... eat dinner early and not be able to work out on a full stomach, or work out and eat within an hour of going to bed and risk reflux.

It's still made with a form of "sugar" even if it isn't called that. Artificial sweeteners are still bad for you. Also, anything with carbonation can be potentially harmful.

Yes.

Stick with unsweetened drinks like coffee, tea, and water.
Caffeine can be a decent metabolism booster used in moderation, but too much will interfere with your sleep patterns and jack your heart rate and blood pressure.
Sleep is just as important as working out when trying to reshape your body.

Thanks-I was afraid of that. I always have a diet 7-up with lunch and dinner. It's tough to get used to water with food-unsavory. I heard about sleep too. I am also adding green tea at night.

i got rid of mine by running, working out with weights and advocare nutritional supplements. give yourself a goal. mine was to run my first 5k and do it in under 30 minutes. after one month of training and doing the 24 day challenge from advocare I lost around 30 pounds and ran my 5k in 29 minutes and 58 seconds! losing weight/ getting in shape has to be a lifestyle change. but you can do it!

I rarely do soda.
On a hot day working hard, I'll do a bottle of Gatorade... not crazy about the sugar or sodium content, but straight water doesn't cut it the kind of work I do.

I've probably had a TOTAL of a 6 pack of cola over the last 6 months.
My normal drink is iced tea. No lemon, no sugar.

Also... hate to say it....

Beer. Put it away. When I started gaining weight was when I started drinking, and it went on at my ass and belly first.
Same thing is happening to my step daughter. She drinks wine, and she's gone from a size 5 to a size 12 in a year.

Alcohol is metabolized as a raw sugar.

There's all kinds fo great advice here, but a couple more thoughts I dont' think were covered.

Metabolsim
Your metabolic rate will continue to decrease as you age. I remember at 30, I thought holy crap, what is going on? So, do aim for a healthy lifestyle change, and do not go for unsustainable gimmicky "diets." You'll be better off in the long-term. As others have mentioned, more muscle mass will help increase your resting metabolism.

Diet
Think of it as a noun, not a verb. Diet is what you eat, not a short-term activity. Every creature on the face of the earth has a diet.

Processed food
Always eat the least-processed food you can. The closer a food is to its raw, natural state, the more nutritional value it will have, and the less synthentic, non-nutrional crap filler it will include. If your body is well nourished with what it needs to function well, the more satisfied you will feel, and the sooner you will feel full. The more packaging and unpronouncable ingredients a "food" has, the further you should stay away from it.

Alcohol
It's got more calories than soda. That's why alchol can catch on fire. Watch, and reduce, your intake. Damn my love of bourbon. Damn it to hell.

EDIT: Damn it, Rich, you just beat me to the alcohol.

I totally missed your post sir-sorry. Thanks for the info to you too. I am going to see about nonfat milk with meals. I drink plenty of water in between but I just have to have a beverage that goes well with food. Maybe NF milk. Extra protein there too which don't hurt us big guys at all

I feel your pain man. I got into a car accident in 07 which messed up my knees so I can't run or do any high impact type of exercises. I have been a lot less active and have defiantly gained weight cause of my diet which in turn have gained noobs and a gut. I finally gave up drinking soda all together a month ago cause I was drinking way too much a day. Now I have urge for a soda and my body doesn't like it when I do have one cause it kills my stomach. Now I drink a lot of gatorade and some water but I need to drink more water. I am finally to the point I am sick of how I look and am going to make a change. Keep us updated on how things are going.
