Left shoulder's been bothering me for a while. Saw an orthopedist/sports medicine guy today and am trying steroid anti-inflammatory and going for MRI. I know surgery is a last resort but I am expecting the worst. Anyone had this procedure and how was the recovery? Was it worth it overall? Haven't so much as touched a weight in about 10 days and am anxious to get back to it!

Had my right rotator cuff repaired in '07. Was out for about 6 weeks, then had another 3-4 weeks of PT. Function is nearly back to normal, with slight lose in reach to upper back. Overall very happy with results. Spent about a year and half putting it off. Should have gotten done sooner.

I had 4 weeks of PT prior to surgery, 3 days/week. This should be in your plan of care too. The research says this improves recovery time, range of motion, and decreases post surgical pain/discomforts...per the MD.
    Good luck.

Had labrum repaired with rotator damage as well as bicep tendon damage. Only the labrum was completely torn. Out 7 months. Pain was not it an issue after a few weeks. Range of motion took a while and 80 percent strength at 6mos . Full strength after a year.

after 7 years of a torn labrum, pain and not wanting to have surgery, i finally did it last year and wish i had done it sooner. you are pretty much out of commission on the arm you have worked on. You dont want to have to go thru it twice... so you cant lift anything, push a mower or anything else. just make sure you go to the pt all the way thru.my shoulder is back to 95%... the other 5% is it still being weaker that my other arm.

Damn this makes me cringe. I have major issues with my right shoulder dislocating. I am pretty sure I have something torn on the backside of the shoulder :(

    The better coast
I have tears in both my labrums in my hips right now from some bone spurs. Complication that is some inflammatory arthritis we are trying to get under control. Hopefully we get everything under control and Ill get surgery to fix everything this December :woot:

But, they said the surgery is not "that bad" and with all the new technology they can do it with minimal scaring which is very nice! Hopefuly they get you feeling better OP. Make sure to read reviews on the doctor that's performing the surgery as well. I would not want someone specializing in knee's doing a shoulder operation.

Turns out mine wasn't torn! MRI and X-ray both ok. Had a cortizone shot about 4 weeks ago and am starting to feel a bit better.

And I'm from Pike County, OH to the guy who wanted to know that. slimjim33

same here!! hate to tell you, but your life just changed. you will feel great and one day, do something stupid and be sore all over again. learn the quick stretches and exercises. the best for me is to hold a light weight, and let my arm freely pendulum in tiny circles. it feels great. some days, i wont be able to reach my car radio. you learn quick what you can and cannot lift..

lifting a load over my truck bed is a no-no. i take the time to drop the tailgate now.

What are some symptoms? I know its hard to tell but when I sleep on my ARM my shoulder kills for days! Exercise hurts at times and other times its fine. Sleeping seems to bug it though......mostly a dull ache and limited ROM.

I have two torn rotator cuffs (was a swimmer throughout high school & college), and extremely loose shoulder sockets (certain motions make them pop out of the socket).

Was supposed to have surgery this summer but I couldn't afford to take the time off work.

Chronic dislocations here. Had surgery four months ago. My shoulder feels really strong but my range of motion is still lacking especially the external rotation. I had been suffering for about 20 years and finally had enough. I wish I had done it earlier but just wasn't in a position to do so.

Dr said my labrum was really torn up and the shoulder was very loose and sloppy. They put three anchors in the bone and stitched the labrum to them. I saw the picture, pretty impressive. For years my shoulder was achy and I couldn't sleep on it. I think with the labrum tear you usually have some type of event or accident that causes it and the rotator cuff can happen over time with many small injuries.

I am lucky enough to live near the Hospital for Special Surgery that focuses on these types of injuries and I found a Dr that accepted my insurance. I think I only laid out $250. Now the PT is $120 a week so that hurts the mod budget!

Gray wire, Some lights in the bed area, and some character marks throughout.
I had a severe anterior labral tear. Had around 2-3 dislocations a week. The doc couldn't believe how bad it was. Did the 6 wks of pt prior to surgery. Shitty surgery, but the best thing I have ever done. A year after I was at 100%, now the range of motion is better than stock. DO NOT take the pt as a joke. It hurts yes, you will want to punch the therapist in the face regardless of gender, and despite the look of joy on their face while bending your arm in ways that you thought only possible by the likes of stretch armstrong, they really are trying to help you. But knowing that your shoulder will be better and not falling out of socket because you sneeze is worth every ounce of discomfort.

Hey guys, I havent contributed to this forum, but I peruse daily. I have had 5 surgeries on my shoulders for torn labrum and rotator cuff. Lots of dislocations. For any of you with a ton of dislocations, find a good surgeon and ask them about the Bristow-Latarjet repair surgery. It is a painful surgery and and painful rehab but it will keep you from dislocating again. Well, as long as you dont go doing anything stupid, no Judo or anything like that. Just thought I would put in my 2 cents about something I have experience with. But with this surgery I wont need another one. Good luck guys and I hope you feel better. If anyone is in Kansas City, look at Dr. Stechschulte.

    Hello.
I thought I would pop in and just give an update on how my shoulder surgery went in case other people are on the verge of having the same procedure.
Little bit of background info, initially injured my shoulder about 3 years ago crashing my bike, driving my left shoulder into the ground.
After the accident I continued to have shoulder instability with recurrent partial dislocations. Each one characterized by extreme pain, and complete arm immobility after. Finally decided that something was seriously wrong and got an MRI with a radioactive dye tracer.
Diagnosis was a torn labrum and severe bone damage/loss around the joint, met with a shoulder specialist and he told me that surgery was my only option if i wanted to remain active without continued pain. He gave me two options, arthroscopic or the full open surgery. However he stressed that the open surgery would be the most stable and complete option over my life. I decided on the open surgery a procedure he called a latarjet where they re-built the bone around my shoulder joint to prevent other dislocations. I went in for surgery last September, the first week and a half were definitely rough, a lot of pain and trouble sleeping. I was in a sling for 8 weeks. After the sling I progressed with physical therapy diligently, the surgeon couldn't stress enough how important physio was.
I am now 14 months past and my shoulder feels the best its ever been, its stable, I have played hockey a few times and physical contact is no longer an issue. I began weight room training again after 10 months. Still do not have full ROM or strength in my left shoulder but my surgeon and physiotherapist told me that would come in another year.
If anyone is on the fence about getting such a procedure done, just do it.
The results have been far greater than I ever thought.
