Move to Canada. Problem solved. Seriously, I hear we pretty much let anybody move in.

You guys are my backup option if things completely go to hell here in the states. Being a medical professional basically means guaranteed immigration acceptance as long as I don't commit a buncha felonies between now and then.

    Hey Fenwick1993,
All you have to do is: 1. Go to the ER. 2. Show the lady at the window your thumb and tell her you've broken it. 3. When they ask for your insurance card tell them you don't have any insurance. 4. When they ask how your going to pay for it tell them to send you a bill and you'll pay it. 5. When you get their ridiculous bill in the mailbox, and it will be ridiculous, just send them $10.00 or $25.00 or whatever you can afford every month. Take care of your opposing digits. They cannot be replaced.

Work out the payment plan. Most hospitals will accept "whatever you can pay" each month, but you want to negotiate it formally, otherwise it can still negatively affect your credit.

Furthermore: Make sure they send you an itemized bill. This will show you where the absurd upcharges ($20.00 Ibuprofen, for example) are and allow you to negotiate the total cost of the bill down significantly in most cases.

This. If this injury occurred while you were doing your job, and you weren't violating any company policies, the whole schmeer could be on their dime.

Actually they can, they can chop off your big toes and put em on your hand in place of thumbs. Don't ask me why the hell anyone would do that.

Would you like an extremely long winded post about why it's not the same?

I don't feel like typing that much.

The long short version is that though they can slap a toe on your hand to act as a sort of flipper/pincer, you won't get nearly the same dexterity as a true thumb, nor the same sensation (re-approximating nerve tissue during reconstructive surgery is a gambling game at best). You WILL have some permanent level of disability compared to an OEM thumb.

Edit: You also get the joy of learning to walk/balance again without a great toe, which is a hell of a lot more work/rehab than most people realize.

The argument (and it is correct) is that completely losing a toe causes less disability and decrease in quality of life than completely losing a thumb, so if you gotta pick, transplant the toe.

The ideal situation, obviously, is to retain all your digits to begin with.

couldn't/ wouldn't it be easier to go to a "bone yard" and get a replacement thumb thats as close to "OEM" as possible?
