anyone know anything about foot/ankle/leg pain?

I have a recurring problem with my foot/ankle/lower outside leg that the doctor can't figure out. Anyone think they can help me out here? Getting to the point of desperation/utter frustration

I had a similar pain that turned out to be a torn tendon. I forget the name of it but it runs down the outside and curves under the ankle bone headed towards the little toe. Googled it it is the brevis peronial tendon

What were your symptoms or what did the pain feel like?

Pain was horrible. It hurt the most when I walked on uneven surfaces such as the beach. He held the outside of my foot while I tried to push it out. I had no strength and that caused the pain. He said it is a common result of rolling your ankle.

That sucks, but that doesn't sound like what's ailing me

I'm recovering from tendonitis(sp?) in my right ankle. Have to wear the dreaded othopedic inserts my shoes, which fixes the problem, but also causes some pain while your body re-adjusts.

What kind of doctor did you go to see? If it wasn't one, you might want to try seeing a physical therapist.

2 general practitioners, 1 orthopedic specialist, and worked with 2 physical therapists (actually 3, but one was primarily helping with knee rehab)

I will type exactly what's going on, but right now I'm on my phone and it would take me an hour

I had a LOT of ankle pain, among other joints. I thought it was from having 2 knee surgeries, but after seeing a physical therapist, it turned out I had flat feet.

He recommended that I get the green SuperFeet insoles (the stiffest and with the most arch support) and that, combined with a lot of stretching (hip flexor and groin stretches) have got me feeling a lot better. My balance has improved significantly, and I only rarely get ankle pain.

That being said, I played 2 games of softball at shortstop last night and my ankle is a little barkey this morning. Go figure.

Here's the quick run-down of what's happening:
This mainly happens when I run (especially on inclines and hills) and sometimes when I play soccer.
1. So my foot will start to hurt a little (mainly on the outside), and this will send pain up through my ankle to the outside of lower to middle leg area.
2. As soon as I start to feel this pain, numbness quickly follows that spreads from the outside of the lower to middle leg area down through my foot to my toes.
3. Then immense pain and numbness and almost what feels like cramping along the outside of my foot and leg.
4. This results in a restriction of motion in the ankle/foot area.
5. This disallows me to bend or point my toes upward. If I try to manually flex my foot or toes upward, it results in extreme burning or pain in my lower outside leg area.
6. The lower to middle (and sometimes upper) outside of my leg is almost always sore, swollen, and stiff the next few days and icing usually doesn't help.
7. Once this process has started, I have to take about a week off from running because if I try to run it will immediately repeat the process within the 1st quarter to half mile.

Here is a picture of the areas affected. Any help?

Kinda weird how even orthopedic specialists and PT's can't figure out what's wrong. Hope it gets better and you figure it out man.

Well...they all came up with some kind of diagnosis and treatment. Some things "worked" for a little while and some didn't. But the symptoms always reappear in a month or two, so no one has managed to get to the root of the problem

Sorry was at work, do your symptoms only occur with exercise? If so I would look at exercise induced compartment syndrome, and see a doctor. If your foot is constantly this way, prob a peroneal nerve injury and see a neurologist or suggest these to your doctor.

it doesn't always occur, but the catalysts are soccer, running up hills, shoes a little too tight or not wide enough, etc.

FYI, i bought a pair of barefoot style running shoes about a year ago, and they seem to have helped alot. but the problem still arises every now and then

I had similar problems with ski boots. The outside got numb, then tight etc.
The fix was to widen the area around the base of the big toe, plastic ski boots are commonly stretched out as needed. You might need to give your toes more room.
I have slightly wide feet and slight bunions. The bunion seems to cause boots to be tight, but manifests itself on the OUTSIDE of the foot.
This could be a decent start point for you maybe.
