Any teeth grinders in here?

I apparently grind my teeth pretty severly while I'm asleep
My premolars and molars are ground nearly flat, which makes them extremely sensitive since there's little to no enamel covering the dentin/root
Also, almost all of my teeth have small fractures in them due to the force I must be clinching while asleep

Anyone have/had this problem?
Have you had them restored/rebuilt somehow that didn't cost 1-3k a tooth?
Have you had any success with nightguards?
Etc.

I'd appreciate any help with this - I'm sick of just googling info about it
Some one-on-one convo with someone who's dealt with this would be nice

 

I grind my teeth. Started in high school when i had my braces removed. I put a hole in my retainer over my right canine tooth.
I have worn a night guard for about 6 years now with no issues. I went the cheaper route with the DenTex brand that is heated then molded to your teeth and bite. The I am on my 2nd one now since they to break down with the grinding. I do not feel the need to spend the $$$ on a custom ones when the drug store brands work just fine for me.

I sometimes grind my teeth but have not had any really bad side affects from it yet. I wake up doing it more when Im stressed about things.. . .

so, I have been able to control it a little bit by making sure im in a good mood by bedtime. this involves beers.

I will look into guards though as sometimes I still wake up with intense pressure on my teeth. thanks for this thread!

I have tried the DenTex guard recommended (Thanks, Jester!) and it's good enough, for now, to keep me from spending $600 on a custom one

Can anyone comment on options to have teeth rebuilt?
Like I said, I've ground mine down pretty much flat
I'd rather not have them ground the rest of the way and crowned; not to mention that would cost at least 1k a tooth
Is there anything else that can be done?

 

Yeah I do it really bad. I need to try then dentex mouth guards. Every other one I've used has ended up on my floor or pillow in the middle of the night. My jaw hurts every day from the pressure too

 

My sister grinds her teeth pretty bad. She wore a football mouthpiece at night lol. Pretty sure she still has issues with it.

 

I seriously grind my teeth. I use a custom night guard. I've had to get two root canals to fix the damage. I have pits in my molars and at one point just had simple fillings to help ease the pain. This was before I started using a night guard so they didn't last. Dentists are expensive and I had super messed up teeth until I joined the army because I couldn't afford it. Not sure if fillings would work for you but might be worth it to look into it.

 

yeah, I had 3 molars root canaled for this reason and the guy who did them did a really horrible job;
3 years later I found out, from a routine x-ray, that all 3 were infected because the canals weren't fully excavated, and one even had a drill tip broke off in it
The options were to have them re-root canaled at 1k a piece, with a 20-50% chance of failure... or get them pulled
So, instead of rolling the dice with 3k; I got them pulled

My remaining molars are all heavily pitted too

The whole situation makes me so stressed I could grind my teeth!

I've had a problem with teeth grinding, about a year ago the dentist said I must have been grinding my teeth because they're more worn down than should be for my age, but I didn't even realize I was doing it. It was either in my sleep or I was doing it subconsciously when I was stressed out..but they didn't suggest using a mouthguard and didn't say anything last time I went there. So I really don't know lol. I have an appointment in 3 days so if it's still a problem they'll probably let me know

 

I had no clue I did it either
I've been told by several dentists in the past that I do it; just based on the wear
But, I thought it had happened from my teeth shifting around during the time I had braces; so, I never paid mind to the grinding theory
Eventually, after being told the same by a new dentist; I'm gathering they must be right
And the more I pay attention now, I do notice that I subconciously clinch (not so much grind) my teeth pretty often
Also, the second I wake up I notice that I've been doing the same and/or grinding

 

If only i had teeth to grind.......

I'm getting in that same boat... just had 3 molars yanked cause of an incompentent dentist
Aesthetically, the best ones, cause you can't easily tell; but, darnit! those are the main teeth I chew on!
Now I've got to chew everything on my front teeth; and the roof of my mouth is always getting all torn up because of it

I may end up getting partial dentures... and I'm only freaking 30

 

Alcohol makes me grind and clack my jaw( opening than slamming it shut again) its only been the last few years that I noticed I did that.

I picked up the habit of "bad teeth grinding" in last few years. Several docs said mine was due to PTSD from the military.

You have to use a night guard to save your tooth enamel.

I found out I had TMD from grinding and clenching my jaw while I sleep and when awake. It got really bad once my daughter was born. I guess the stress of working, dealing with a newborn and balancing bills got to me. Luckily I brought it up to the Doc before it got really bad. It's since gone away now that I've learned to realize when I'm doing it. Doc told me if it returns I'll have to use a night guard.

Been grinding my teeth for about 13 yrs. First dentist didn't catch it, his dental tech did. The next dentist made me a "mouthguard", that literally lasted 2 days. And then I found a competent dentist, he referred me to one of the best Orthodontist in the Nation. For the 2 1/2 yrs of braces, I had little to no grinding issues. Then about 6 months after the braces were removed, I started grinding/clenching real bad. The Orthodontist suggested their "night guard" for a mere $700, it replaced my top retainer. Every so often i'll have jaw pain from clenching at night, but the grinding has been eliminated.
