crappy rotator cuff.......cortisone shot!

about 4 years ago...i had a cortisone shot in my right shoulder because i messed up my rotator cuff pretty bad...but didnt require surgery.........4 years ago! that shot did pretty damn good.............but about 3 weeks ago, i started hurting again...after a round of disc golf(i was throwing too hard....didnt stretch and hadnt played in a while)....now,i can barely lift my arm/bend my shoulder any. hopefully they'll give me another shot of cortisone on thursday........cant do the surgery thing and be outta work anymore.....after being out 5 months last year with my neck surgery and all.

thoughts?

 

my neighbor had shot cortisone shots in his rotator cuff as well for many years. you are basically postponing the inevitible, you are going to have to have surgery eventually. the shots may be able to get you by for another few years though.

thing is....i realize that i will eventually have to have surgery....but honestly...and i know its dumb as shit for me to say....i got a pretty high tolerance for pain. i just wanna do a cortisone shot until i can do them anymore......basically now because i absolutely cant be outta work again...and with hunting season coming up....gotta be able to pull my bow back. i figure i will eventually have the surgery, but for now......i honestly think the shots are the best option for me.

 

I had the cortisone shot in my lower back about 4 years ago, best thing i've found so far. I'd try it again if you can't miss work, but I'm not sure if they are as effective the second time around. Good luck with it.

 

got my cortisone shot today.....giving it a few days to see if it makes a difference as it did 4 years ago. x-rays didnt really show anything, but the guy said i could have a slight tear of a tendon in there. we will see.

it was still pretty sore today, but i have some naproxen(anti-inflamatory meds), so hopefully it'll start working soon. hope so anyway...going on vacay next weekend for a week...dont wanna feel like crap then.

 

no extra vacay time i can use anytime soon.........for now anyway.

thats how it was last time for me.....so im hoping it will not be as sore tomorrow. its wait and see i reckon...for now.

 

cortisone shots degrades/degenerates cartilage and tissue causing long turn effects. adverse effects include harm to immune response that may lead to long recovery if any recovery possible. surgery is ur best option. therapy, exercise, Calcium + D(oyster shell). My .02

 

yeah.....i have weighed the options....and read about the effects. i realize ima have to have surgery eventually...im just trying to get buy until i can do it.......cant take any time off now, as i took 5 months off last year from work when my neck was fubarred and i had surgery on it.

 

Brother if u were to ask me, yes the papermaker is important, but ur life is TOP. Even with ur current situation with ur prior leave, u should be able to take another for ur shoulder. This injury is affecting ur ADL's (activities of daily living) and will also affect ur productivity at work. They cant fire u for that. well unless ur a proby. Go to the state and make a plea. They should be able to accommodate u. Another adverse effect is the inability to properly thrash your Taco. Now that my friend, is something to think about. good luck and keep us posted.

 

You need to look at it this way, 30 years is not old for a shoulder. I tore my labrum in my right shoulder in 2005. I worked for 4 years until I got it fixed. I had compensated so much for the shoulder not being stable that I am having a hard re-training it. I am 8 weeks post-op now. If there is no more time than next year it is but do get it done. THey had to re-attach my labrum, my cuff was all chewed up near where the bicep attaches and the labrum was all chewed up in the same place. To top it all off I had a cyst that had form in the back deeper part of the shoulder joint that caused my arm to go numb. Recovery is long for me but 100% glad I had it done.

Not true. Surgery is rarely inevitable.

As for returning to work in short order after a rotator cuff repair, that depends ENTIRELY on the individual's response to surgery, the extent of the repair performed, and what the person does for work.

FYI, normal course of rehab following anything other than a minor rotator cuff repair is 12 to 20 weeks. Yes, you read that correctly.

But again, no one is standard.

I want to be very clear about this: You need to be careful with that shoulder and follow up with your MD regarding preventative medicine. If you do not address the issues you've had so far with some preventative strengthening of the rotator cuff and continue to pound away on your shoulder, eventually you WILL do some major damage.

Rotator cuff injuries almost always fall into two categories: Traumatic, or chronic repetitive degeneration.

 

had a deep tissue massage about a week ago.....helped alot better than that cortisone shot did. i can actually use the shoulder to a better extent than i have been able to in a while.

 

Be careful with that feeling. You will stress that shoulder more now because it feels good. I am at 10 weeks post op now. Therapist tells me I am looking at 5-6 months before returning to my work. I have a job that puts alot of stress on overhead lifting and massive reptitiive motion. Just take it easy until you can get that fixed and if you keep banging on it, like the other person said you WILL cause long term damage.
