So I've been brewing my own beer for around 2 years. I'm making a couple of clones of my favorite beers right now. I have 5 gallons of Fat Tire and 5 gallons of Sierra Nevada going. I'd say I have around 8 different kinds of beer sitting in bottles in the pantry, and plan to make a few more before summer gets here so I'll be all stocked up for plenty of BBQ's.

Ya, cloning is one of the main reasons I started doing it because some of my favorite beers are $4-$5 a bottle. But if you can make it yourself, its more like 50 cents a bottle. The only annoying thing about it is that it takes time and some culinary skills. I suck at cooking, so its a challenge. But if you do it right, you get to have some fine beer for a whole lot less. I screwed up a few beers. One wound up being close to 14% alcohol , which was actually a good accident. Meant drinking one beer is all you need cause it will hammer you!

I LOVE FAT TIRE!! Been buying it for years. 1st tried it in Boulder, Co

I used to buy spent hops from a large local brewery, and make Beer bread. The brewer would buy most of the loaves I made.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Thats a dangerous brew. I lost a cell phone to that one.

Me too! I can't get it here and that sucks. I keep visiting their site to see when they may finally distrbute it here. No luck so far. I first tried it in Boise.

Got a Pale Ale in the Keg right now.

I'm addicted! Haven't tried to clone a beer yet, just messing around w/ my own recipes.

You using kegs or bottles? I'm thinking of shifting to kegs because keeping all the bottles and cleaning them is a royal pain. As far as cloning, I've done a few and none turn out exactly like the beer I'm trying to recreate. I know that New Belgium has their own special yeast, which gives it that unique biscuit-like flavor. So the clone I have uses a different yeast and grain ingredients to supposedly get the right flavor. It'll probably be good no matter what.

My Wife makes wine. Her latest one was super good.

Don't do beer but I make mead. Bottling 6gal. of Pyment (honey/grape) this weekend and I've got 6gal. of a sweet pear mead in the secondary. I'll be making another pyment in a week or so. That recipe (we call it "Bloodline") has won a few ribbons in the Drunk Monk Challange. I try to keep at least 50-100 bottles of several diferent kinds on hand at all times.

I'm gonna start a Pale Ale this weekend.

Anybody cloned Leinie's berry weiss? It's the only type of beer my gf likes and it's not always that easy to find. I'd like to have a good recipe in case we can't get it anymore.

I heard it takes a year or so before mead is ready to drink. Is that true?

I used to brew beer but my wife hates the smell of hops. As much as I love it I mainly do wine now and an occasional batch of Mead. Last year I made close to 300 bottles. :bananadance:

It takes a while for it to fully mature but it's more than drinkable after a week or so. The longer it sits, the better it is, though. That's why I try to keep so much on hand. Drink the older stuff and sit on the new. I've put down a fair amount of recently bottled mead and it's just fine! I wouldn't make anything that I'd have to wait THAT long to drink. I just don't think I have that kind of patience.
