Alright, admittedly it's a noob question and I'm looking to see what the opinion on TW is regarding this topic...

All the reading and research I have done splits it at about a 70% bad idea, 30% no issues. Some guys say its a terrible idea and you risk wasting time, effort, and money on a bottle bomb, while other folks say if you wrap the cap in electrical tape or dip it in wax, you will have no issues.

I am in the "no its a bad idea camp" myself. I only ask because my mother-in-law got me a dozen 32 ounce screw top glass growlers for my birthday recently and I'm not sure what to do with them. They do not appear to be anything significant, and I don't want to be disrespectful to her gesture. I just would hate to wreck a batch of beer in them, or create bottle bombs...

The growlers I got are these

    Thoughts?

You'd get more and faster enjoyment if you took those growlers down to your local pub and had them filled.

    Drink... Ahhh.... done. :D

Those are not useful for beer as they aren't made for the pressures of carbonated beverages. I wouldn't even take them to a brew pub to get them filled. Nice gesture is all you got - sorry.

Thanks satcom211, figured that would be the answer. I'll find some use for them around the house maybe, or donate them somewhere.

Brewing, or bottling?? Original question said brewing, but all comments seem to be discussing bottling.

I have several growlers that I use in my "operation". I'll use them to get a big yeast colony going a week or more before a brew for a high gravity beer. And I have a few that I keep on hand to fill up from a keg for imbibing elsewhere... or for gifts. They have their uses.

    Sorry, bottling specifically.

I may hang on to them and see if I can find a use for them. I will not be bottling with them though!

Yah, ok. Indeed bottling bad. But I see no issue with filling them from kegs for within-a-day consumption. I often fill in afternoon for evening emptying.

(does make make wonder if they could be fit with swing-tops somehow... then bottling ok... hmmm...)
