Department of Homeland Security

I am a current SSG in the US Army with 6 years of service. I'm due to get out July 28th if my terminal leave is approved and was looking for a possible career in DHS. I only have my Associates degree, but I would like to finish my degree when I get out.

Does anyone here work for DHS or any of their sub agencies? If so, could you recommend what would be a good path to take in order to get a job with them? I'm looking to become a "mission support specialist", I.C.E., or another position to where I could use my military backround.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

No first hand experience, my cousin is a Border Patrol agent though. He enlisted in the Air Force for 4 years after college then when he got out applied for the Border Patrol and State Police. Got the call from Border Patrol first then went off to training. He said some of the people in his class had no military experience so if you wanted to go that path I'd think you'd have a definite advantage. Probably not much help but thought I'd share his path. He loves it so far and is stationed in San Diego.

Thanks for the insight! I think Border Patrol would be an exciting job. I'll have to look into it. Thanks!!

My wife's a CBP officer at the airport. Sounds like a really boring job stamping passports of incoming passengers but she gets to carry a gun so she enjoys it.

I would think border patrol would be much more involved.

Thats what I was looking for...not sure of the title, but I met a prior Marine who does it in Orlando, FL and he loves it compared to being deployed all the time and never knowing his hours.

If you don't mind me asking...how's the salary for this job? is it GS # ?

I think my cousin makes around 50k he's been in 2 years or so. I don't know about pay scales and GS this and that though haha. I'd imagine your location would have a lot do with the excitement factor too. If you're in Fargo, ND guarding the US/Canadian border I'd imagine that would more boring than being a long the US/Mexico border and also whether you're out in the field or stuck checking passports at border crossings or airports.

What does your cousin do? If I could land a job making $50k with DHS I would take it in a heart beat. I would just really like a job where I know my hours and will not be deployed anymore. I want to see my kids grow up

I work for the Department of Homeland Security by way of the TSA. Don't know if that is of any interest to you at all, but if you have any questions I'm more than happy to answer them.

All I know about TSA is that they are the ones screening passengers prior to departure. I'm not interested in that part, but is there other duties within the TSA besides screening? I'm looking to start at GS-7....hopefully

I am not fully in tune as to what the different pay grades are (GS-7 for example) but there are quite a few different opportunities within the TSA actually. Within the airports there are screeners, behavior detection officers, as well as off the floor positions such as security managers, trainers, etc. There is also a TSA "corporate" where there are all sorts of different positions, though I am not familiar with everything they have to offer. Wasn't really an option for me as I have no managerial or military experience and I am in school full time. That might be something to look into...

I do not work for DHS... but a similar agency... My only thought when I read your OP, was that you better get cracking on job applications to DHS... It takes a while to get through the process from what I understand. Took me a year and a half to get on with my current Agency.

Sorry man I just saw that. She started as a GS-5. Cheesy I know, but she's up to a 9 now. I think 11 is the highest they can go without going into management roles. Hope that helps.
