    I am just about to finish a basic lineworker program at a community college and just wanted to see how many lineworkers are at TW. I'm just ready to get out in the field and become part of the lineman brother-hood, I know I got to earn my stripes but I believe I'm ready. If your a grunt, operator, lineman, foreman, or anything else in the the line trade I'd like to hear from you.

    Brother in law is, he rides one of these to work. Loves it, although your mileage may vary depending on how queasy you are.

    I work for a power company with a lot of line workers. I'm only a electricial meter reader though.
    The lineworker trade is really booming. I really wish I did that trade years ago. Excellent salary, security, benefits, and tons of overtime

    My dad has been a union lineman for 20+ years and still loves his job... he doesnt climb much anymore since he's the General Foreman for a company based in downtown pittsburgh...

    i'm seriously considering joining the IBEW myself... i'll finally be able to afford that S/C haha

    I work for an electric coop in Arkansas. Not a linemen but friends with all of ours. They are hard working guys. I tell anyone I know looking for work to go to linemans college. The pay and benefits are great. We have a kid thats 20 making over 60k a year. Wish I woulda known about that when I was 20.

    Not a Power Lineman, but I just finished a 33 year gig as a Telco lineman and went inside for a logistics gig for my last 4 years or so before retirement. Too many surgeries and busted up parts over the years led me to this decision, although in my head I still miss the job. Blown out L5 disc also led me to this decision.
    Essentially, We did similar work and worked alongside power on many occasions as my company has custody of about half the poles in this state.
    Callouts,placing, transfer, and removal work for poles, Underground, buried and aerial plant work.
    Not Power work by any means, but I made a small fortune over the years, always worked and never got laid off,although several of my co-workers did when a previous owner "purged" my department of younger workers several years ago.
    Just another option for some to look at.

    Funny, I snapped a pic of my final set before I went inside a couple months ago.

    Hey all!

    Just got off the phone talking to someone from the local lineman union.
    they suggested learning how to climb poles before heading even into the interview,
    any thoughts?

    Any info is good info.

    Some places will make you demonstrate your abilities to climb as part of the interview. My company does that.

    I asked about that and it looks like they may ask during the interview if you have climbed before, but they have an 8 weekend "bootcamp" on climbing. If you pass with flying colors, you have the best chance of getting the apprenticeship.

    Where would one get to practice this?

    Do you have any friends or family that are Linemen? If so then ask if they would be willing to give your some pointers and maybe lessons. You'd have to buy your own gear (eBay has good used climbing gear for relatively cheap).

    If you lived here in AZ I'd gladly give you lessons and pointers.

    @bucktales was the money good doing telco work. I want to eventually go to the power side but for now want to build experience with lifework. I went to Northwest Lineman College and have my certificate and everything. Any advice on getting in or places hiring from anyone in the trades?
