I'm a mechanical engineering student at UTSA for the moment. So far I've only taken some basic math and science classes, oh and engineering ethics was fun. Next semester I'm going to take applied physics and hopefully more classes that are with my COE (college of engineering)

Studying Civil Engineering at UT Austin. My advice is get out of the "Mechanical Technology" program and into the regular engineering program at your two year school. As was stated before, they are VERY different. That being said you should take as many core engineering classes (Calculus sequence, Differential Equations, Phys I, II, Chem I, II, Statics...) at your two year/community college. Bust your ass, get a good GPA and then apply to the best engineering schools in the country. It worked for me, 3.86 GPA at my community college in NY and now I go to UT Austin, 3rd best CE program in the country. Good luck with whatever you choose.

It's either going to be EE or Structural/Civil Engineering, i'm not quite sure yet. I'm a little less than half way done, but it has its struggles. Stick through it and any advice from my experience is to join any clubs that have a focus in math, science or engineering. They give you a lot of help with direction in your field/major.

Civil Engineer here. I work with the local government and its a great job!!! Looking to take the P.E. next fall . . . Like everyone said, stick with it! Seems like a lot of the people I knew dropped engineering and went to business, easier I guess

Both are good majors, but I prefer structural engineering.

the nice thing about mechanical engineering is the fluidity with which you can move from one field to another... my past three jobs have been in the engineering simulation software (FEA), aerospace, and nuclear industry. (and i'm only 32!)

i would highly recommend the ME path.

No, mine is an access cab, and I no longer have the bull bar. But that is pretty close.

Seismic analysis is a lot of fun. Too bad there weren't more classes offered in that area when I was in school.

Yeah, i'm hoping to be at UCSD soon and I've been hearing that they *have* some sort of scaled earthquake where they show you the sort of damage an earthquake can actually do to a building etc. etc....haven't looked into that part much but sounds like fun:D

Ah yes, the infamous shake table. That thing is awesome. I highly recommend looking into taking Structural Dynamics as an undergrad if offered. It makes things easier when you start working and/or move onto masters.

do most of you with engineering degrees, have pretty good luck getting a job in your field right after school?

I was one of the lucky ones in my class to land a job when I gradutated. Most of my classmates applied for almost 2 years before getting hired on. From what I remember, structural positions were the hardest to get. Depends on your area, and what field you're going into.

I'm an engineer in the CG but not really an engineer as you guys are speaking of, with your degrees and such! I just work on engines and mechanical things, motor, AC, HVAC, pump, Diesel, Generator, boat engines, firepumps, fuel sytems etc..... I do admire you guys who are going for engineering degrees. Pretty awesome and i thought of going for a mechanical engineering degree if it wasn't for the CG.
