Break my back for more money or sit on my ass with no future?

Some background on me first:

I'm 27, single, no kids, I don't have a degree due to previous events, I'm not stupid, I'm not lazy and I don't know if I would go back to school or not but I don't have too much time anyway.

So as you all know I sit in front of a PC all day. I write crap down then type it up. I also watch loading video, go through thousands of invoices for errors and finally verify those invoices with WMI. The fancy title is Loss Prevention Specialist. I have full benefits where I am at and I make $18.50 an hour plus $1.70 gain share with no max as far as I know. I don't really like my job but it pays the bills. There is no real future for me at my job now. I get a 3% raise every year but just got a long overdue raise of $2.20 to bring me up to what I make now. So you say $18.50 is pretty good right? Well in CA I'm looking at $1000 rent for a one bedroom apartment in a decent area. Nothing is cheap here because it is shitty Derpifornia.

Now do I become Swamper for less money to start with night hours and I would have to actually work? A Swamper is a warehouse bitch. The job would consist of putting labels on boxes, driving a scrubber around, pushing a broom around and other crap like that. It starts at $16 but maxes out at about $20ish after 3 years. It also has full benefits plus a pension and is a union job. From there I can move into warehouse at make the big bucks. They pull in about $28-29 an hour with gain share and night pay.

Do I bust my ass? Advice? Criticism? My company deals with alcohol so we are pretty much recession proof.

What is your background as far as work is concerned? Have you been in your position since you hit adulthood? Where do your interests lie?

My First inclination is that you need to move on. You are currently stuck at home, working a dead end shit job where you will never be recognized for working hard. Move on...

If this is your career choice (this company, that is), break your back while you are young and reap the benefits when you get in the warehouse. If you don't plan on sticking around for years, I say sit on your ass and start looking for a job you would actually enjoy.

I would try my hardest to get out of that state and move somewhere decent. With that LP experience you can get another job pretty easily I would think.

Maybe in time you would be able to go back to school because having a degree is ultimately where the money is at.

Agreed. If your not happy. Move on. If your not happy why stay. But are you ready to make a living being a warehouse guy? And will this give you time to go to school if you really want to?

You've got "Loss Prevention" in your job title. I would use that to your advantage.

www.lpjobs.com

LP Analysts are in high demand right now (I am one). Are you really good at what you do and an analytical thinker? Consider getting a CFE (certified forensic examiner) certification. I will be going for mine soon.

Is $18 good in America?

Jesus, you guys get paid as bad as they do in the Maritimes.

FYI - It's easier to work with your brain than your back.

I'd suggest night school or something. Find a job that you look forward to going to cause it makes it way easier to get up in the morning.

$18...really? Fuck me.

You clearly need to do something different than what you are doing now, if for no other reason than because every time I see you post about your job, it's negative.

I sit in front of a PC all day long, and while it has it's down days, I love it. I get stir crazy every few hours and will either go for a walk around the lake downtown, or just go walk around the building or something. Aside from that, I enjoy it.

Is the warehouse work you are talking about with the same company you have now? If not, then that plays a big role, in my opinion. You have tenure where you are, and I think going back to square one at this point in your life would be a bad idea. Unless you just started your current job, but I don't think you did.

If the real money is in the warehouse, and you think that's something you want to do for a while, then I say go for it. Work your ass off while you are still young, and then sit behind a desk and manage people and take an Aleve or two a day.

Something I always ask myself when I have my down days at the office is, if somebody were to walk up to you right now and offer you the job of your dreams...what would that job be? Ask yourself that.

Fink

Reported.

JK man, seriously though, I would look into where you could go with your current job title and degree which sounds like it could mean changing employers. If you like the employer you work for and would like to stay there, sounds like you're going to be breaking your back and working your way through the unions. I don't know anything about the position you're in or considering but here's a couple things to consider:
You say benefits are the same, like exactly, is one better than the other, retirement, etc?
How about job security? You'd be starting a new union position and would be low man on the totem pole. The other position has the potential to pay more later but if you get laid off somewhere in the middle that doesn't mean a thing.
What's your degree in, could you use your degree and working experience to apply for an even better job doing something completely different?
Lastly, and most importantly, what will be come of your post count?

Believe it or not, minimum wage is $7.25. That is $290/40 week BEFORE taxes. Insane.

EDIT: That is Federal Min. Wage...some states are higher (and I'm sure CA is one of them).
