Guys this isn't about a tacoma . I am 17 and want to go to helicopter school and it will cost 80'000 I have looked at grants and I can't find one that will help . If you know anything or have any advice please help . I am not rich and I don't have a money tree . But I need to find out how to get 80'000 for my school . If you are a helicopter pilot looking at this tell me how you got it and made it . Thought about going to a oil rig and saving my money . But again would love your advice tacoma world hasn't felled me yet . I am hoping it won't fell me now thanks so much guys for your time and advice

Noah, have you considered the National Guard or Reserves? If you want to fly rotary, I would recommend the Army Guard or Reserves. I'm an aviator on the Air Force side, so I'm not sure if they are still doing it, but there was a program called "High School to Flight School" where they were fast tracking guys, like yourself to flying helos in the Army. I am unsure how competative these programs are, or if they are even doing it anymore.

If they arent, turning wrenches on a helo and using your tuition assistance for flight school is an option. Thats what I did. Also, look at more than just one flight school, as the prices can very wildly. $80K seems really steep. Is that zero time to a commercial license with CFI endorsements and X amount of hours or something?

Best of luck, I wish I would have started flying when I was 17. Its an expensive hobby but if you can do it for a living, trust me, its a blast.

I'm a fixed wing pilot, not rotary. I will say your best and cheapest alternative is to join the service. If you're smart and healthy, you'll make it there.

Civilian pilots (rotary too) from zero time to commercial is a money sucking ordeal of your wallet.

Not interested in the military?... Earn your private certificate at a school, build a bit of time and go on to earn your instrument rating, then your commercial rating.

Once you have those certificates, earn your CFI for rotary... this is a big "time builder" for you.

I don't think you get a job placement to be honest . The chief pilot sayed if I go he would try to help with a job but it's not a Promise it's in Tennessee . It's like 70 '000 plus tax . He says it's 300$ a hour

DON'T LET AN ENLISTED RECRUITER TELL YOU "YOU GET TO FLY" you get to RIDE as an aircrew. If you want to fly you gotta be an officer. However, if you wanna drive a submarine then they would me more than willing to take you, just don't be a nuke. Oh yea, driving submarines is REALLY boring... :)

If you are not joining the army reserve, I think the cheapest route is to get all your ratings in a fixed wing and then add your rotary ticket like File IFR said.

I would never advocate joining the Army if you have a choice. You wanna fly? Join the Navy or Marines, not as a enlisted.

The going rate for a fix wing private pilot ticket around my area with an independent instructor is around 6-8k
