    I work for a railroad contractor called XO Rail outta Jacksonville Florida, we are contracted out to FEC, Norfolk Southern, CSX & other Rail Roads to install new signals & crossings.

    I hired out as a conductor. After bout 5 years they sent me to engineer school. You can go on www.csx.com and view and apply for jobs. You will have to go to conductor school for 6-8you weeks in Atlanta but you get paid to go and they pay for your motel.

    how was the conductor position? tough? Currently I work in the road construction field as a job foreman, makes for long hours and a lot of time away from home. Is this what I should expect as a conductor?

    I'm not afraid to work just a little tired is all...haha

    The work is not hard at all. A lot of train riding and long days and yes a lot of time away from home but it pays real good. Excellent benefits!!

    Lay tracks in the middle of June in SC and see how jelly you are. I've laid tracks before and it wasn't much fun that's the only real experience I have with rail lines and trains, I got to blow the horn once that was pretty fun. :D

    I'm well aware of the great benefits and pay but I'm getting to that point in life where I may even be willing to take a pay cut for a little home life....No offense but being that it is union I didn't think the work would be all that hard. Right now a typical day for me is 12-15 hours average, longest being nearly 23hrs!!!

    Now that you are an engineer, do you get more time at home as compared to your previous conductor position?

    Sorry to blow this thread up but this is really something that has been on my mind...

    No I'm gone just as much. I will have to admit I love doing what I do but the hours suck. I'm on call 24/7 with the exception of being off 2 days every 2 weeks. When I leave I'm usually gone anywhere from 12 hours to 3 days.
