Calling all auto and master techs!!

I've been working in the shop as a preventive maintenance tech for over a year. I been wanting to move up but to do this I need to take my ASE's. I'm the type of person who is a hands on type. What kind of reading and study materials you guys recommend to help me prep for the test?

That's a tough one, dude. I was an ASE certified parts specialist for awhile. I also had passed the tests for electrical and brakes, but I never had the work experience to actually be certified.

I don't think I ever really studied for it. It's one of those things where if you know enough to do the job effectively, the test is not really that hard. Ask yourself if a vehicle came in that had a brake pull to the right, would you know how to diagnose that? If a vehicle came in with one dim headlight, could you look at a wiring schematic and decide where the best place to begin troubleshooting would be?

Your best resource is the guys you work with, ask them what they remember about the tests, and ask them to give you some pointers on the things you are weak on, you know your own strengths and weaknesses by now.

There's a lot of troubleshooting going on here on this site as well. Read about people's problems they are having, and how they were resolved. Also, if I remember right, there are a lot of questions phrased as "tech A says......, tech B says......who is right? A, B, Both, neither" Kinda like the DMV tests, multiple choice designed to trip you up.

 

Haha I did ask all the techs at work, even they can't give me an answer. The problem at my work is they don't keep the cars that long to run across that many problems. I work at rent-a-car place where they only keep their vehicles for at least 35k-40k miles. I think I might go ahead and take brakes since that's what we usually come across a lot.

 

check out a site called asepreptest.com i think thats the address google it you will find. If you have common sense and a bit of car know how you will do fine.

 

there is a set of study books you can get off Amazon. search ase test prep books. brakes and steering/suspension are pretty easy. know your different abs systems well
