I'm a light fanatic so I found it necessary to retrofit my lights. After quite a bit of searching and debating (mainly with myself) I decided to go the following route:
Ballasts: cheap ballasts I had from my PnP kit. Will upgrade soon.
    Bulbs: Phillips 85122+ D2S
    Bulb adapters: Amp to D2S
    Projectors: Morimoto Minis D2S
    Shrouds: Apollo

I'd have to say, if you plan on retrofitting and want an easy location to get all your parts, head to The Retrofit Source. They have all the stuff you need and are very helpfull. Call them and talk to Matt if you need information.

Here's a little about the process:

With these particular projectors, the install is very simple. Follow the BHLM write-up in order to get the lights apart. The projectors slide into the pre-existing opening in the reflector bowl and clamp to it via a nut that threads onto the projector.
    IMG_7556_490441dc693577e63e16ee18ddc8dc81818f0bd3.jpg

The projectors come with a three-pronged alignment tab as seen on the 9003 bulbs. That tab then aligns with a slot on the projector so that the projector gets mounted in the correct rotational orientation. As simple as this system is, there is some slop in the rotation so keep that in mind.

The solenoid wires ran easily through where the bulb shield was originally attached. I did, however have some cheap OEM "replacement" lights that my body shop installed so the shields were attached via a nut and threads on the shield, so there was already a round hole there. I simply snipped the connector off the solenoid wires, fed it through and then soldered the connector back on. Easy as pie.
    IMG_7553_3b3461cfd766908c8565aadac67c9a4fd6bd39b2.jpg

BE CAREFUL hogging down on the nut that clamps the projector to the bowl. I used a set of channel locks to aid in my grip which worked well. Until the nut split. They are cheap casted nuts that have terrible threads, so be gentle. I'm going to contact TRS and see if they can send me a new nut.
    IMG_7541_ce4ee460cde5d4210a68b4c7cfdf34072090f629.jpg

After the projectors were mounted, it was time to move onto fitting the shrouds. Here's a shot of just the projectors mounted:
    IMG_7552_3fa7db952b68f1fc5d2e3c3c0eaa365609a9a320.jpg

The shrouds weren't as hard to fit as I anticipated. Once the projectors were mounted, I set the shrouds in place, and marked where the shrouds would come into contact with the bowl. I found it was easy to remove the necessary material on the bottom rim of the shroud with my orbital sander instead of my RotoZip. I did do a little trimming on the inner lips of the shrouds with the RotoZip in order to clear the projector's 4 fastners. It was hard to get good pictures of the shroud trimming but here's some attempts. There wasn't much to take off.
    IMG_7549_0175320c6d7e2d51394a0405c49542038eb510ac.jpg
    IMG_7551_3d258c190f8b8c2e292380d825f4ad6d50646d6b.jpg

I mounted the shrouds with epoxy. I used the projector's 4 fastners (as seen in the picutre above) as attachment points and I put a bead around the black plastic of the projector. Once it cured, the shrouds are on there no doubt. Very solid.
    IMG_7548_dbad7800a50ab147628c092a0a4bb498996b4af6.jpg

I modified the rubber boot to work with the D2S adapters. Once the adapters were pushed into the boots, and installed on the bulb, I ran a bead of silicone around the D2S adapters to seal up any gaps between them and the rubber.
    IMG_7564_4ba1fa0968bac4dc3918a30882f945a6d72f11ff.jpg

While I had everything apart, I also painted the bezels with Krylon Fusion satin black. I followed Viet2100's write up and preburned them after the paint was dried up. This will gloss them up a little but gives a nice look.

It was time to seal them up. Following Viet's write up, I removed all the old adhesive from the light in order to make room for 3M Window-Weld. My masterpiece:

    With the window-weld installed:
    IMG_7569_8da43f61045eb317c13fa23ba0a2560b23574053.jpg

Once all was said and done, I think they came out awesome. I'm very pleased with the look.

Looks great! I like that you don't have to cut and modify the headlight for the install, that makes it much nicer I am sure (I wish I could find some like that for my dodge) I will definitely have to use these on Sami's truck if we ever do the retro on hers

Sweet man! That made your front end 10X better looking. I'm planning to do a retro with my lights too, but I'm going with FX-R projectors. Good info from your write-up though!

    Thanks guys!

That was my great debate. I was set on the FX-R projectors before I ordered the Morimotos. It's not that I lack the ability or drive to do the FX-Rs, but I talked to Matt with his information and just the ease of the installation, I decided that they would be great for a first time retro. Perhaps if these don't work out in the long run, I will upgrade to TLs. But I'm loving them so far!

    Thanks!
I followed this write up to pull the lights apart: BHLM Write-Up

This was my third time pulling lights apart. Mine were difficult this time because they were cheapo OEM "replacement" lights that had really cheap plastic. Everytime I would try and pry on the warm plastic with a screwdriver it would just bend out of the way. But OEM headlights and most other aftermarket headlights are easy to pull apart. Just follow that link and you will be fine!

Well, first time retros are always the hardest. This will be my second retro. My first was TSX projectors inside a 96 Tacoma headlight. Yeah, remember those sealed-beams style? lol It was pretty tough getting the TSX to fit, but I got them in. Hmm...hold up, I might have some pics of it.....

What makes the FX-R's better than these?

From what I understand, there isn't too much difference in the output. I was told the FX-Rs would produce a wider throw though. They are just more involved to install.

I would say yes. Once you get all the parts (easy to do with a phone call to TRS), it's basically following some directions for taking the lights apart and having some tools (rotary tool, sander) available. I can help answer some questions to if you decide to go this route.

ok sweet man. i am almost positive that at the beginning of next year i am going to tackle this and BHLM my headlights. so for the Morimoto Mini stage III(d2s) with these components-
    Ballasts:Morimoto 3five
    Bulbs:Morimoto 4300k D2S
    CCFL Angel Eyes: None
i could just open the headlights, cut the shrouds a little bit and set it up like HIDs and i would be good to go?
    Projectors: Morimoto bi-xenon
    Shrouds: Gatling
    Wire Harness:H4 bi-xenon

Looks really good. I am also deciding between the FX-R and the miniD2s. I am leaning toward the miniD2s as well just for ease and convenience. Yeah, they aren't as wide, but the FX-R also does not give much foreground so it might not work as well in a lifted truck. I figure its not that much difference between the two, they are both much better than stock. Would love to see in-truck shots of the output once they get aimed.
