The Taco uses the H4 bulbs and if you get the bi-xenon ones it comes with the shield, not sure what your friend's F-150 uses. The shield prevents the light from blinding oncoming drivers. You not getting flashed doesn't mean you're not blinding them. Put them back and be courteous to your fellow drivers.

i'm keeping an eye on it, as soon as someone shows any signs of it bothering them I'll fix it, but these lights are not model specific, so the shield is kind of weird to me... all the housings using h4 bulbs are different.

oh and yes, his f150 uses hid for both, and doesn't have a shield

See thats what I don't get either, could you take a picture of Hi and Low beams facing a wall a night so I can see the difference between my shield and your no shield??

Also, best way to know if your blinding people, switch vehicals with your buddy and drive down a street towards each other as if to pass. Me and my buddy did that as a test, thats the only way you will know your lights.

And my rubber boots on my 2nd gen fit really easy over the H4's when i installed them. We both have the same HID's, only thing is your 1st Gen rubber seal boots must be different. post a picture of those too?

DO NOT use HIDs with the shields on top, they will further reflect light onto oncoming drivers, they were not intended to be used in that fashion, just put them in with the opening facing up... as intended.

My rubber boots wont go on my 2nd Gen. Did you get better light output with them on?

The rubber boot has nothing to do with light output, it helps to keep the moisture out of the headlight fixture.

I knew that was the main purpose of the boot but I figured that it would also help to direct the light more so it is not escaping into the engine bay...

The rubber boot is black and should absorb light, as all black does, it can't and does not direct light in any way, shape or fashion. The reflection and direction of light in a headlight is caused by the reflective surface in the headlight as well as the lens in some vehicles.

AFAIK only H4 bi-xenon HID bulbs have the shield on them, someone correct me if I'm wrong and the shield is there for a purpose, to keep light from reflecting to the bottom of the reflecting surface in the fixture and bouncing up too high onto oncoming traffic. Leave the shield in, it serves a purpose like I've said before.

This is the pic you should see when you look down on the bulb while it is properly installed.
