Clock space for mounting switches

On the 1st gen the clocks are known to stop working. I was thinking of places to mount switches since my aftermarket pioneer hu has a clock my phone has a clock and my iPod hooked to the radio. I dont really need that clock. Figured paint it black and use it to mount switches. What are your thoughts and suggestions on this?

Edit Cut a plate out of aluminum to use.

might work. i'd probably head down to a junkyard and find the other style bezel for that spot -- the one without the hole for the clock cut out already, as that would give you a better mounting point.

or you can mount your switches to the left of the steering wheel.

your talking about the cover that covers the hole if your truck didnt have a clock correct? and i dont want switches to the left i personally think that looks bad unless you have the knockout panels or whatever you call them. i dnt have any

yeah, that cover. it goes around (over) the clock location and then around the ignition as well. it's pretty easy to change out.

yea that would be easy to change out just pop that little cover off... i had thought about just using the front of the clock since it is somewhat transparent and put a led behind there so you could see them at night

that'd be cool... i dunno how the clock sits in there (my truck doesn't have it), so i can't make any recommendations for/against that.

i say if you've got a cool idea, go for it! make it your own, man!

Update to this thread. The clock face I originally cut and used began cracking from becoming brittle. I used some 1/8 thick aluminum and cut this on the waterjet today. Works great. Had to cut down one of the screw post but it fits great.

Works really well for me. I have 3 other clocks in the truck. Stock one is in a bad place to me. Update ordered the new bezel from the dealership this weekend. 25 bucks. Now when I get it I just have to modify it to accept the plate.

Thanks for the mounting plate! I ended up cutting a large hole for a new clock that matches instrument cluster and works even when car ignition and acc off. Works great!
