..or more accurately I did not realize that DTRL are treated differently in the US, perhaps just with the 2012 and up models.

    Pete,
I'm saying that when my HL are on, so are my DTRL's....I thought it might be because of the switchbacks I installed, but to corroborate my remarks, I went to the dealer today to check on a '14, and when the HL is on, the amber turn/DTRL is illuminated ...this is a pic of my setup...Yellow-ish Halogen HL, and VLED 5000K swithcbacks, and corners....I also snapped a pic of the model I tested...:notsure:

i think we figured it out, that the two filaments (3 wire plug) are used as follows:
-hi output filament is the DTRL or Signal light.
-lo output filament is used as a marker light.
The low filament comes on with the corner marker light when the light switch is in Park.

Could test it, as I believe the DTRL is only on when the truck is running, so with the engine not running, select the Park light setting of the headlight switch. With normal stock bulb, you should see both front signal lights come on at partial brightness.

With the switchback VLED, if the signal is flashing, it produces amber light, when the signal is on continuously the white LED is on. It does not distinguish between hi filament and lo filament, unless you hook up the white dimmer wire which Doc has done.

Our trucks (OZ & VE7OSR) only have 2 wires to the front signal lights, and are not used as a marker light.

is there any reference/pics that there are "stock" tacomas that come with 3 wire for drl? I tested using the dim filament and it is pretty much useless in broad daylight. Hence I think that is the reason behind the design to use the bright filament for drl as it is actually visible even in bright sunlight. Hence I also think is why the toyota tsb fix is to replace the lens with one that does not melt instead of using the dim filament.

    - so the melting signal light lens problem is probably a supply problem at Toyota, whoever made the lenses for them, changed materials with different specifications, and a lower melt point.

Rob, after further research. also found out that there is an "A" setup-USA..and the "B" setup which is Canadian/Canadien...hence the Bulb fitment # 3157 or 3157CK...

    - both setups use the 3157CK at the front signals, and 3157 at the rear signals. The difference between A and B is that the Canadian switch setup does not get the DRL position on the switch. We don't get the option to turn the DRL off.

^^^ this totally makes sense based on my previous post.
I figure the DRL MUST use the bright filament.
So any assumptions that tacomas using 3 wires must be using dim filament for DRL is incorrect.

For those of you in this thread having headlight problems, there is GREAT news!

Toyota has begun sending "Warranty Enhancement" letters out for 05+ Tacoma's with DRLs that will now cover the replacement of your headlights regardless of mileage if they are melting or discolored. This is NOT a safety recall, but simply a free extended warranty on that part only. No need to wait for the letter, go see your dealer for your free headlights!

Check this thread for a copy of the letter and updated TSB info:

Well to quote myself, I went down today for the appointment and...they rejected the enhancement. They mentioned I don't meet the criteria a.k.a. they do not see any bubbling or melting occuring in my DRL's. Otherwise, VIN wise, I meet the program requirements.

Also, I cold welded a weak mounting point on the headlight because it cracked and due to that they said they would not do the warranty.

Any idea what options I have at this point on? It is truly a fire hazard and I'm very upset with their decision. This was A-1 Toyota in Milford, CT.
