Daytime Amber Lens Melted...

I did the mod where your turn signal light is on with your Daytime Running light which gives you a nice bright amber light. Looks really nice. Problem is the extra lite element gave out extra heat which melted my amber lenses inside the headlight. Anyone else have this happen. I need to find a LED Amber light that doesn't give off heat like a standard bulb does. Any suggestions?

I was wondering about the possibility of that happening.

I ordered the parts to do the DRL mod and I found this website for LED lamps.
http://www.eautoworks.com/search-ALL/mk34-ca4.htm

I haven't received the parts yet so I haven't investigated what the bulb number is though.
They have an inline resistor you can buy if the turns don't work because of low resistance too.
http://www.eautoworks.com/product-Led-33226.htm

I will replace the stock bulbs for sure now that I read your post. Thanks.

He said he had the turn signal on and the DTRL. It ws that extra heat that melted the housing. He didn't say it was the dtrl mod. nor did he say it was the oem one.

Oh...
I don't know what mod he did then but he could still use the LEDs though, right?

The mod I'm going to do is called the DRL mod. It uses the amber turn indicator lights. And it is the same as OEM using Toyota parts.

Here's what the mod says in part...
"What you will be doing is replacing the current TURN SIGNAL RELAY with a new one + a jumper. The new relay will turn your FRONT TURN SIGNALS on when you don't have your headlights on and you are moving. This allows your truck to be seen better in all driving conditions."

I just assumed that's what he did too.

Yeah, that's the mod that he did also. DTRL and DRL is the same thing. I just recently did the mod also. I haven't encountered any problems yet, but then again, i don't have them on for extremely long amounts of time as maybe he did.

I'll be lookin out for the update on this LED amber light. If it's bright enough, maybe i'll change mine also just as precaution.

There are 2 different DTRL mods. One is the same as an OEM install and would be the same as if it came right from the dealer. The other one taps into a wire. The OEM install makes use of the blinkers just like before the mod. The other (which I think he did) uses the turn signals and keeps them on. Thus the brigher light.

Then again, I could be way off on this. But Idoubt the OEM mod would melt the glass. LED's would work BTW. Might have a cool look.

I pretty sure the bulb in the front signals is a dual filament type. So when the DRLs are on both filaments are burning to make them quite bright....so it does get quite hot. But I wouldn't think hot enough to melt the lens! I've got factory DRLs with no issues. It almost make you wonder if Toyota uses 2 different headlamp housing, depending on whether the truck has DRLs or not.

I have an 06 w/70K miles on it and factory DTRL's. The lenses are scorched yellow, cracked and appear to be melting away. The dealer says I have an electrical problem causing both filaments to burn thus causing the meltdown. I don't believe them. Any other 06 owners out there w/ factory DTRL's that could take a look and let me know if both filaments burn?

<-------I have LEDs in my running lights and my turn signals.

the only problem is the leds use less power so you will get hyper flashing with the turn signals. you will have to get a resistor also...i think

Try this.

No wires, just remove stock flasher relay and put in new.

This is great if it works....
Don't forget, the stock flasher is already replaced in the DRL mod.
So the one in the link would have to do all the things that replacement does and then also work with LEDs.
