HID help

for HID do I need a relay on my 2005 taco?

 

From what I understand it is only needed if you run the (stock style hi/lo type setup) hid's, which most people do... so I am pretty sure the answer is yes. For fog lights a relay is not needed.

There are people with hella more knowledge about hid's than me on here and I am sure they will chime in.

 

yeah the relay is only for high/low kits...just low beams will only be ballasts then bulbs...no harness therefor no relays

Personally, I'd run a relay harness for ANY HID kit you use. Whether it's in your lows, or fogs, whatever. Up to you though. This is what I have always done for years in previous vehicles. Cheap insurance if you ask me to not fry your stock wiring that isn't made for the high initial draw of the ballasts firing up. Plus anyone I've ever known with extensive knowledge of vehicle lighting on other forums have recommended this as well. I'm sure plenty will chime in saying they've been not using one for X amount of years with no problems, as they always do. Your call. 15 bucks per kit to take the extra precaution has always been well worth it to me. No different than any other wiring application, do you want to send more current through it than it's designed to handle?

 

I'd recommend it, but I haven't used it in my truck or one of my many friends' cars. I have never ran into an issue, but I wouldn't say the same to someone I don't know.

 

That's how I see it. Many don't have problems, but I wouldn't feel comfortable saying it's fine without it and then having them run into an issue. And when I've ran them in other vehicles, it was a cheap sense of security for myself. Not running them in the Taco though but if I had a kit I'd again use a harness.
