DDM HID Hi/Lo Harness Melted

Hey guys, I’ve had my DDM HID kit (Hi/Lo 55w 6000K) for a few months now and haven’t had any problems up until last week. I know some people have had issues with DDM but I couldn’t find anything like this. The first thing that I noticed was the passenger side would turn off randomly. Turning the lights on and off really quick usually solved this problem and powered up the light. Then a couple days ago I went to work and noticed my lights were on and stuck on the HI beams. I couldn’t turn them off even when I turned the car off.. so I unplugged the harness from the ballasts to cut the connection and went about my day. When I got home to look at the lights I detected a faint smell of burnt plastic and noticed that the housing on the harness was melted inside with residue all over it.. wtf. I’m less than 10 miles from work but is it possible that the high beams overheated the harness?? DDM is def getting an earful from me. What I haven’t decided is if I should just get my money back and go another route, or take the replacement harness… Anyone experience or heard of anything like this?

 

i would take the replacement harness. i had one crap out on me before but ive had my second harness for about a year now and have no problems

 

Hmmm...I've been having the same problems with mine. I should probably pull them apart and have a look at it.

Randomely the lights would stay on after turning the truck off, took a couple of cycles of the light switch to turn them off. My P/side light has suddenly stopped working this week, and my HID fog lights stopped working about a month ago.

I think we've fallen prey to the "You get what you pay for" mantra.

 

Thats crappy.. It seems that people have been having a ton of issues with DDM recently, I don't remember seeing as many complaints when I was originally researching them. I have since put the stock bulbs back on and am currently battling with DDM. They are trying to give me the "installation error" bullshit.

I think I'm gonna switch to retrofit and do it right w the projectors.

 

I had something like this in my truck. When I first did the install the box totally burnt up. DDM replaced the box and that didn't work so they replaced the whole harness. I've had friend use DDM HIDs before with no problems. But as for me, my next kit is coming from retrofit source.

 

its a crappy harness/relay many kits used. i had one go out on my gfs 55w kit luckily mines still working. they are not sealed and get water in them and short out. always seal the relays before installing

 

I have an H4 kit and have had no issues but am switching back to Philips X-tremevision H4s. Don't care for the light pattern and how it goes from lo to hi. Had better light with the philips in my other H7 housings so got me some H4s. Don't need HIDs in both fogs and headlights anyway. I will use the ballasts and wiring for converting my Hella 500s to 3000k 35w HID. Rather have the optional lighting as HID anyway. The mandatory lighting is going back to Halogen. I will say that I have had no issues whatsoever on the 4 vehicles we have owned that have had DDM HIDs added to them. No bulbs out, no dead ballasts & no melted wiring. Lucky it seems.

 

Hm this is interesting...

My driver's side is the one that went out, and the p/side didn't. I installed them so the Relay and ballast on the P'side were on the inside of the fender wall, but the d/side ones were installed on the flat surface below the battery. Very likely that water pooled there and shorted mine out!

 

the relays do get pretty hot sometimes but it could be just the connection to the bulb or the bulb or the ballast, but prom the pic its the relay. i just installed my 3000k 55w bi xenons and only one side worked and no highs. i had to manually bend all the pins to get a tighter fit on everything and now everything works. also dont forget to put some high temp grease on the bulb itself where it slides. take them apart they are very simple, all it is is an electro magnet and a spring. just lube the sides up and throw them back in and they will never stick as they do when they get older

 

I just had the exact same thing happen with the exact same lights. I opened the actual relay casing and everything was ruined. I'm glad it didn't start a fire.

 

I had the same problem with my DDM kit as well, ended up grabbing another harness on eBay since DDM refused to replace it.

I think it was 12.00 or thereabouts.

 

Damn, I just ordered my HIDs for my fogs (H11) from DDM TUNING.

 

Damn, lucky there was no fire....

 

What site do you folks recommend for getting HIDs?

DDM = You get what you pay for.

At least they have improved. In 2009, they had disconnected their phones and claimed that it was in the interest of fairness so issues could be handled in the order received through email.

I already feel like my shipment that's coming in is already fried. Lmfao!! Hopefully everything will be okay.
