I have been wanting to do the DTRL mod on my 06 tacoma but don't want to pay for the harness. I've been thinking about taking the positive wire from the factory DTRL and moving it into the third hole on the blinker. The third hole, that's currently empty, is power to the low power filament in the bulb. I jumped power from the running light socket into the third hole and it functions correctly and still allows the blinker function.

My question is, will this have any bad effects? I know that my model headlight is prone to having the DTRL lens melt and that would probably happen even with the harness. Will this be more of a hazard than just the normal melting?

I did it, and it hasn't had any problems.

I did this years ago and there's no problems.
You're actually better off than having factory DTRL as this mod uses the lower power filament, so the bulb doesn't get as hot and will not melt the lens.
When I did this I jumpered from the corner marker lights to the third empty hole for the power. I also cut and spliced the blinker wire into the corner marker light so both the front and side marker lights act as blinkers and DTRL.
There's posts around here that explain this if that's confusing.
