Headlight MOD - Resealing Tip

Just an FYI on some extra insurance for resealing your headlights. I recently completed my BHLM and all went really well.

After reheating the halves and putting them back together, I used a quality grade silicone sealant, and ran a bead around the seams. Not being good enough for me, I searched at Lowe's and found some Shurtape - Waterproofing Repair Tape. It is sticky as hell and gives a permanent waterproof seal. The foil backing can be painted, but with it not visible when the hood is down, who cares?

Although this may not be needed, the $8 insurance was a good find.

Yeah, it may not look "pretty" with the silver when the lights are out of the truck. As I mentioned above, it's extra insurance, paintable, & not visible when on the truck.

 

3M makes a fine line of Marine sealants too. One takes 7 to 10 days to dry, have used it on depth finder transducers. Tried to remove a bad transducer and the sealant was trying to take off the gel coat. had to slice through the stiff with a shape putty knife They also make a more normal Marine Sealant that sets up in 1 hour and cures in 24 muck like the silicone. But its make for wet areas. Silicone does always not work well in real wet areas and never use it under water for things like transducers.
I think the Marine Grade sealant would work very well for your headlights. Look at 3M Marine Fast Cure 5200 Sealant, no extra taping needed using this stuff.
