Strut Mount Issue (Huge) Please Help!

Hey guys, I just purchased my 09 TRD Tacoma. And today I noticed that it wasn't sitting level, so after some inspection this is what I found:

Driver' side


Passenger's side


So any advice? I'm new to the truck world, I have been a rally/cosworth/subaru/euro/ford guy until very recently. I have some pretty good automotive technical knowledge but when it comes to long travel, i'm still learning.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

so im guessing you have the total chaos long travel kit. Those coilbuckets were notched for the outlets of the remote resis. I would take out those icon coilovers and try to pound the coilbucket back in shape and weld a brace in between those. Have you recently been beating on the truck.

That top plate cannot be left like that. It has to be reinforced somehow. Why someone would notch that is beyond me.

 

Damn are all remote resi's like that? I just bought some Fox's and the thought of notching that is kinda no bueno....

Def. need to weld some sort of sapport on it. I wonder if theres another way?

 

Well as I stated in my first post, I just got the truck. Last week in fact. So NO I haven't been hard on it. I haven't even taken it off the pavement at all. And Yes, I do have the TC Long travel kit.

Anyway, I was wondering myself why the coil buckets were notched, I really doesn't seem strong at all.
But here's a very important question that I really need answered though, can just the top (strut) mount be removed or is it permanently attached to the whole coilover?
Because half of that one side is completely broken, and I'm trying to figure out if it needs a new top mount to the coil or a whole new coilover itself because it's not removable.

That happened to me too. http://www.chaosfab.com sells a secondary shock hoop that fixes the problem, and also gives you a place to mount a second shock. Also Icon has changed their top hat design and they are much beefier now, they should send you a couple new ones if you send them those pictures.

In your first pic it also looks like there is an issue with the top plate on the coilover. Looks like it has been bent up along with the mount. Try to post some more pics if you can

 

Why are these COs requiring notching the coil bucket? Is this some long-travel exclusive headache?

 

No, but it is a reservoir specific headache. The hose hits the bucket if you don't notch it. I ended up flipping my hats over to match the stroke of the kings, but it means you need extended bumps in order to prevent bottoming.

Not with late model Icons it isn't.

 

Unscrew the resi hose (discharge nitrogen first) and cap it off and you won't have to notch shit. It's only to make room for the res hose, and if you flip the top hat and extend the bumps you can do it without notching, but I assure you if you go hard you will still bend the coil bucket. TC secondary shock hoops with a tube between the pass and drivers side (basic engine cage) and you won't have any problems. Everyone does shit the fast way instead of the "right" way and ends up crying when shit breaks.

 

You're saying the hose doesn't hit? I couldn't even get mine bolted in they rubbed so bad, I tried it without notching and it was a no go.

No rubbing. You made me nervous so I just went out and checked...the JIC fitting is VERY close in tolerance, but I cut a strip out of an index card and was able to slide it between the fitting and the roof of the coil bucket. It clears.

Also, Icon's installation instructions say nothing about notching the coil bucket.

Looks like either Icon or Toyota changed something in the past few years.

Here is my set-up now with the shock hoop and coil over bucket gussets. A few hundred in buying pre-fabbed gussets or taking the time to make your own are priceless compared to the costs/time incurred to repairing damage to unreinforced coil buckets. Engine cage needs to happen for me as well to really give me peace of mind.

Are you running a LT set-up or just a bolt in coil over. Icon's bolt in coil over may have been specifically made so you dont have to notch anything. The longer LT coil over shock may not have the exact same 90 degree dimensions. They just spent the extra time for a vehicle specific configuration. Thats one of many things I really like about Icon.
