Just remember a long travel leaf pack suck as f55, f67, h70 or Allpro leafs. Will all require you to relocate the front hanger and run a 9 or 12 inch shackle. If you consider the J59 or allpro replacement leafs. they will bolt right in. Then you have that aal pack you were looking at.

You will learn very fast that building a truck is not cheap even if you do the work yourself.

Don't know if that is a 100% true. The back usually can't keep up with the front but whats the point of having the back if the front can't keep up? Most people start with the front. So they can go a little faster. Then they do the rear suspension then cage work.

But after my learning experience I feel the first place to start a long travel build is the cab. A nice solid 1.75"x.120 roll cage if your baller status throw in a 2" cage. Then work your way forward knock out an engine cage and front long travel then when money permits knock out the rear suspension. If your learning to fabricate and want to do the work yourself start with a front and rear bumpers. Practice your welding. My welding was pretty shitty for a long while cause all my instructors at school were more worried about stick welding while I wanted to learn mig and tig. I actually didn't learn to weld pretty decent until about a year ago. I was watching my friend weld on my truck and saw what he was doing and it finally clicked to me. Unfortunately most of my old shitty welds are on my truck. But things will get cut off and re-done as time and money permit.

I usually get my metal from Patton steel cause its easy and close to my work. But lately I have been shopping around since im looking for chromolly plate. i usually shop for chromolly tubing from aircraft spruce cause i usually don't need more then a couple feet at a time.

Last I checked 1.75x.120 DOM tubing was 4.10/ft at Patton's but you may find it cheaper somewhere else. roughly 160-200ft for a cab cage. it adds up fast. Then you got benders, saws, notcher, etc. Over time iv collected or made most of the tools. Now I just need to buy material for my truck.

Haha, yeah for a 5 lug you want to build up the front first when it comes to suspension. I'll have to agree with Chris on this for the 5 lug. There are quite a few weak points on the stock lower arms with the 5 lug. JD fab has a sweet kit for the 5 lug. I think I saw it used on Dezertrangers a few days ago. If you got the fab skills make your own kit.

For the rear, run an add a leaf and extended shackle. Mount some 10" or 12" shocks. Use a 2.5" shock. They are great. I had a J59 and got 12" out of it.

I'd highly recommend doing your rear like this if keeping your bed is your main concern and looking for a budget. It's not long travel but will work very well until you cantilever or put the shocks through the bed.
