Hey man I ended up not using the Mercer Fab rear frame plates I know you were after them to. Wanted to give you first dibs on them before I put them up for sale.

So I did a little something and bent the passenger side frame rail before the cab mount.. my question is would it be easier to chop and weld in a new section of frame? Or would it be easier to just fully swap my cab and bed onto a new frame and swap the engine to that frame? My truck is a 97 Tacoma 4x4 extra cab base and my donor truck is a 96 Tacoma 4x4 extra cab lx.

ouch man! that sucks. Honestly to swap out that much of a frame section will require a ton of cutting and welding and the best way to do it would to basically strip it down. So probably actually be easier to swap the cab.

That's what I was thinking aswell . I seen that u have done a cab swap on one of the forms I was reading was it preety straight forward. Was there anything that ended up getting in the way I should watch out for?

Not really. Was pretty straight forward. I had to do the interior as well and add in the clutch stuff and mod the tunnel for 4wd. Which you won't have to hopefully so be even easier. Could probably do it in a day.

I was reading some threads and you where talking about Alternators that they hardly put out any amps at idle, who did you recommend sending my alternator too, so i can have good amps at idle and at running rpms. I want to stay with a factor size alt.

I have a 03 Tacoma with a ton of upgrades

you can text or email me

Hi man, sorry didn't see this earlier. Anyways I don't know of any place that'll rewind alts off the top of my head. A lot of places will do it and I know you can find a lot of OEM rewound alts on ebay and other places. That said, by doing that you won't see any gains at idle, that is the problem with creating a High Output OEM alt. It doesn't really change the output at low rpms but does at higher rpms.

This is why I did the GM CS141 alt swap which is super easy to do especially now with plug n play harnesses for it. It'll do over double the amps at idle(80-85) and depending on the model peak at 110-140amps.

Sick truck been following your build thread for the past 5 years. Trying to run 5125 10in on the rear but they're practically fully compressed. Did add a leaf to stock leaf set and I feel thats my issue. Did you have to relocate top shock mount? Feel like i should just buy a whole new set of leafs before relocating shock mount.

        Hey man. Thanks!

So the only reason I got away with running a 10'' shock on the stock mounts is because I had so much lift. like 4-5''. I don't really recommend that unless it's intentional like it was for me.

        Blackdawg
If you really want to run a true 10'' shock then yes you'll have to do some relocation.

Otherwise about the longest shock you can run in the stock mounts is about 9" give or take 1/2''. You should be able to get some 5125s around that size easily. So I'd see if you can return the 10'' ones and get some 8.5'' or 9'' ones.

        Blackdawg
Yeah if you want the travel then you need different leaf springs, but its not really the best way to do it. The right way would be to do a real shock relocation with some short body 10'' shocks. That'll give you the best performance all around.

Hey can i ask u something i wanna swap my door but all i can find is manual doors & i have an electric door would the swap still work? Everything works its just my door is badly dented do to a crash
      1. Blackdawg
        Blackdawg
Hey sorry I just saw this.

Yes the doors are the exact same you'll just have to swap the guts from your Electric door over to the manual door. Not too hard but a bit of a task. I had to do this with mine when I did the cab swap.

Hey man! I go to school at MSU in Bozeman but I have a small family cabin in Columbus, I've seen you post that you live around there. Are there many spots to wheel in the winter in the Columbus area? I've been admiring your Tacos, bummed I haven't seen them in person yet. I completely understand if you don't want to share though, I know fun wheeling spots are kinda like hunting honey holes to some guys.
      1. Blackdawg
        Blackdawg
Hey man. Yes I am in that area. i don't do a lot of snow wheeling personally. But Benbow is an area a lot go to. The Pryor Mountains also see a lot of traffic for snow wheeling.

Awesome, thanks for the response. Just read some of your thread, would be great to buy you a beer sometime next summer and pick your brain about wheeling and buying land in southern MT.

I’ve been looking over some of your old Wyoming/Montana trip posts and wondering if any 2nd or 3rd gen DCLB tacos have gone up Morrison Jeep trail? Also wondering about Christina Lake and Goose Lake, which at least in part look doable.

In the SOS report we got my dad's 2nd gen dclb up it. Wouldn't recommend it. Christina is do able but tight. Goose is fine.

I'm in town for a recording with the symphony. Went to school here. Been away for a while I don't miss the traffic!

        Thanks for reading the reports!

Black dawg how do I become a vendor on here I have a le/ tactical business. Website will be off ground in 30 or less hopefully. I am currently a Police Officer and was hoping to be able to sell to some of the guys on here. Posting up sales, special buys and maybe even getting some group buys. selling locally to the ga guys would be beneficial to em and others. I also sent to Chris 4x4.

I put my build thread in the wrong dang area. It should be in 2nd gen builds and it's in the general 2nd gen section. Can you please move it to the correct location?

No I don't think those shocks will be long enough. Best thing to do is put the lift on and then measure what you need

Where discontinued 3 years ago. 5165s replaced them though idk if there are universal one of those either. 5125s will work too. Or if you can afford it get a king or ads or fox shock

How are you liking your MTR's? I too live in WY and want to make sure they do well in snow before I dump loads of money into tires. Also looking into the Duratrac, and Ridge Grappler. Thanks!
      1. Blackdawg
        Blackdawg
MTRS do not do well in the snow. Well not hard pack snow and ice. Pretty scary on those. I'd look at either cooper's or the duratrac for snow tire performance. I love the MTRS for everything else though

Hey man i have the same mcm kit as you, and was just wondering how the paint on your LCA's is holding up. I just installed the kit in the fall and after this winter the paint is already pealing off and its rusted. I live in Alberta and the roads can be salty but i gotta say I'm not impressed.

Just curious if those are 35's and what offsets your wheels are...i fucked up 3 years ago and got sweet looking wheels with zero offset and they wont let me grow :( more $$$ haha anyways let me know when you get a chance...thx man
      1. Blackdawg
        Blackdawg
unless you do nothing but offroad with the truck, stick to 33s.

those wheels are 15x8s with 3.75'' BS. I ran 1.5'' wheel spacers to make everything clear. You need a lot to run 35s. That photo i don't have spacers up front, just the front long travel kit. Rears still have spacers.

35s aren't cheap and the gains from it considering the expense are small. 33s are perfect for these trucks. 35s are awesome but again, unless your offroad with the truck a LOT it is not worth the "looks" at all.
