understand that ROTC gets no respect in combat arms. at least at first.

go in humble, willing to learn from your NCOs, kick ass at PT,wep quals, ect and you will earn that respect.

if youre not combat arms then disregard what i said

If you come out with 4 years of ROTC and a bachelors you enter regular service as a 2nd Lt. You could do a lot worse. Make sure you sign up for airborne and air assault school, so at least you'll have the respect of those before you.

i didnt say it was the wrong career path i said that youll have to work harder to gain respect. besides getting promoted to O-4 has nothing to do with the respect you get from your men. you can be a prick and still get promoted but is your measure of success pay grade or the brotherhood and mutual respect you forge with your men?

btw what mos are you considering?

I don't think anyone really respects butterboots at first. If you want us (the enlisted) to respect you the best rule I have is, "if we suffer, you suffer with us."

I remember my morale was pretty much destroyed when I was standing in the rain for 36 hours and it was 40 degrees outside (range 400). My CO said the inspiring words, "Don't be a pussy gents." then he got in his hmmwv and drove to the rear. He showed up the next day in brand new cammies and dry boots. I never respected him after and still don't to this day.

I went to college, joined the Army as enlisted in 83, went to OCS in 88, retired in 2007.
The biggest thing I noticed in my Officer Basic (a long time ago) from the ROTC folks were not understanding that the NCOs/soldiers can make or break you.
Respect the soldiers and learn from your senior NCOs!
I followed that philosphy, learned so much from soldiers & other branches enlisted service members in joint ops.
They are so many programs now that track direct into officer ranks, I am out of the loop on that.
Just treat others respectfully and don't ask them to do anything you would not/could not do. Oh and don't volunteer for anything.
    Best of luck.
