CIWS will shoot down anything in the air, be it missiles, air craft, and (from what my CIWS tech friend told me) even 5" rounds from other ships. Newer versions of CIWS have an IR camera on them that allow an operator to manually control them. It's not unheard of for CIWS to be used in an anti-small boat role when they are manually controled.

CWIS is last ditch effort to shoot down incoming missiles if you have to use it the ship is taking damage. And damn it need alot of maintenance if its even working. Sea Sparrows or main gun is a better choice if you ask me.

I knew FFG's were on the way out. The last one I saw had its missile launcher removed (but still had both CIWS mounts) and I commented to one of her crew that she's no longer really an FFG anymore, she's really just an FF. Ohh boy, if looks could kill.

Undoubtedly, there was an entire battery targeted on them continuously once they popped up on the scopes. Should a weapons system have been activated, things would have ended very swiftly and explodey for a couple of Ruskies.
nah probably not...FFG have purely defensive weapons...NO MISSILES!

the best they could do is send a helicopter after them... or shoot at them with their limited range CIWS (if they have a working one)...

FFG's are old and worn out... they primarily serve as missile sponges for Aircraft Carriers or anti-drug ops.

Your right about maintaining the things, they were a PITA. When they were in auto, they always reminded me of ED-209 from Robocop. One never knew what was going to set them off, you just hoped that they were not pointing at you when they decided to open up.

I've seen a couple boats equipped with RAM launchers, the CIWS's heir-apparent. Your average CIWS mount had enough ammo onboard to kill 2 - 3 targets, then it is a 30 minute reloading process. RAM launchers cary 21 missiles. Even if they launch 2 missles per target, that is 10 - 11 kills before reloading. Nice upgrade in fire power.

WASHINTGON -- Two Russian aircraft flew within roughly 100 feet of a U.S. ship in the Arctic's Barents Sea last week, an unusual move that has caused some concern among officials in the Pentagon.
According to Pentagon Spokesman Col. Dave Lapan, the USS Taylor had just left from a routine port visit in the town of Murmansk when it was buzzed by a Russian maritime patrol aircraft on September 10th, and then buzzed again one day later by a Russian helicopter. Lapan said incident was surprising partly because the USS Taylor was operating in international waters. Both aircraft flew as low as 100 feet and got within 50 yards off the deck of the American vessel.
"This is a fairly rare occurrence," Lapan said. Pentagon officials would not go as far as to call the act dangerous or hostile, but it did get the attention of the military's Chief Naval Officer. Adm. Gary Roughead spoke about the issue with his Russian counterpart, Adm. Vladimir Vysotskiy, during a preplanned visit to the Pentagon by a Russian military delegation led by Defense Minister, Anatoly Serdyukov.
The visit by the Russians to the Pentagon was the first of its kind in 5 years, and according Pentagon officials it marked an agreement to improve military cooperation between the two countries.
In February of 2008 U.S. fighter plans intercepted two Russian Tupolev "Bear Bombers" flying unusually close to the American aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in the Pacific. The Bear Bombers have also violated Alaskan airspace numerous times in recent years, which almost always ends with American fighters escorting them back to neutral airspace.
