It's not new, it's not Mexico
I was stationed in Alameda (30 years ago) for seven years and loved it. It was like a small town surrounded by 7,000,000 people. Anything you want to do is available in NorCal (except swimming in warm ocean water). The Coast Guard took over the housing outside of the old Navy Air Station so you can ride yer bike to work. The only commissary in the area is at Travis AFB about 40 miles up the road. I don't think there are any military medical facilities left except those at CG Island, so that can be a concern for your family. I don't mean to be a bummer, really enjoyed my time there, even on a couple of 378s. Best of luck on your new assignment!
