So, it turns out I am not going to Iraq :woot: due to the troop withdrawals they are moving the unit that I will be assigned to Qatar... I've never been there, anyone been there before? I'm just excited not to be spending 13 months in Iraq... should I be excited?

Hope you can do some four wheeling in the sand dunes there! Maybe Google 'Qatar' and see that it is a pretty flat piece of desert, full of oil, surrounded by the Persian Gulf, bordered by Saudi Arabia, between The United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi) and Bahrain. I have not been... just what I have read...

My cousin (USAF) has been there several times...at Al Udeid. They take care of him pretty well (last time I talked to him over there he had to go because he didn't want to miss out on dinner...it was steak and crab legs )and he's never had any complaints (aside from being away from his kids).

Make sure you hit up the Chilli's on base! It was great but then again I was on R&R when I was there and had been only eating MRE's before hand.

x6 or so...known several folks that have done tours at "the Deid". If you gotta be over there, it's one of the better places to do your tour. Good facilities and so forth. Worst part reported by most is being away from their family.

    Thank you for your service!

I have been to Qatar on several occasions. It depends on where you are on how good your time will be. Al Udeid Air Base is where everyone flies in. I would not want to stay there, not much to do. Camp Doha is not far away, but not a great place either. I mean, its way better and safer the Iraq or Afghan. The best place by far is Camp Al Sayliyah. This is where most stay for R&R. It has a Chili's, pool, huge gym with barber's and massage parlor. You can take trips to the beach by way of 4X4 excursions and ride ATV's in the dunes and waverunner's at the beach. You can go off post with a pass depending on your unit. I found a link below that shows a little. Not my post though. Let me know if you have any questions. Also, it gets ball hot during the summer. Hottest place by far I've been to. Good luck!

Went to camp Doha, what a shithole. The mall was ok kind of a drive and not much to look at but they have a restaurant named after me so it's not half bad lol. The base is ok too. Big and spread out. Pool is real nice and the R&R spot ain't half bad either. The tailor there is pretty damn good and quick too

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
i passed through Al Udeid while going into/out of Iraq. we were restricted to the transit section of the base and it sucked balls.

Got diverted there when coming home from Iraq due to weather in Kuwait, so my opinion of the base is biased based on us sleeping on the ground next to the flightline and eating frozen solid sandwiches. However you can look at it this way no mortars falling, no IED's, and you still get tax free and haz. duty pay. Yeah you will be away from the family but that is what skype is for. Good luck with your tour.

Yeah, that place is super duper hot, they're not kidding! 130 degrees hot. We waited until night time to do PT and the roads were still on fire if you touched them. I was at Al Sayliyah, like everyone said, not bad. When I was there the lobster would make you sick, and the steak was flank steak, hell of a lot better than MRE's though. Hopefully your there with some guys that don't drink, that way you can have their alcohol rations. Two beers a day just doesn't cut it sometimes.
